Zanzibar Island, just of the coast of Tanzania offers superb diving. There are fringing reefs, walls and coral gardens surrounding the island and further out in the channel there are several deeper and more challenging dives.
One of the most beautiful and well known dive spots is off the north-east of the island. Mnemba Atoll offers a range of diving opportunities for all qualification levels. Inside the protective ring of coral you will find shallow, easy dives and on the outer wall experiended divers can find classic and inspiring wall dives. Pelagic fish, including whale sharkes, can be found swimming past.
Experienced divers will relish Levern Banks, which are reached by Nugwi in the north of the island. The banks are a long way off shore and offer fine ocean diving.
There are many closer to shore, excellent dive spots around Zanzibar which offer superb diving to beginners and experienced divers alike. Stone Town has a number of sites with good soft corals and some wrecks - these are shallower dives around Bawe, Murago and Ngange Reefs.
There is a good variety of reef fish, plus turtles, barracuda, blue spotted rays, tuna, Napolean wrasse, and dolphins. The best time to visit Zanzibar for diving is from July to March.
