Set in a spectacular part of the Selous Game Reserve - Africa’s largest game reserve in southern Tanzania - Azura is a luxury tented lodge offering an intimate and private safari expereince away from the crowds.
The design of the lodge offers the 'wow' factor and there is a stunning infinity pool overlooking the river rapids at the uniquely designed main camp area.
The 12 tented villas overlook the tranquil rapids of the Great Ruaha River and the resident hippo pod. Each villa has a different animal theme and all have plunge pools overlooking the river rapids.
With an 'eco-chic' theme the tented villas feature handmade items from community based projects in line with Azura's 'designed to give' principles.
Villas are part stone and part tented and linked with a large reception area designed to mimic a huge termite mound and are equiped with all the luxuries for your bush stay. Importantly you feel like you are close to nature offering you the feel of a real safari adventure.
The villas are air-conditioned and the tented bedrooms are large and offer very comfortable custom made beds with large opulent stone bathrooms which come with wonderful inside and outside showers where you can shower under the elements in privacy.
The dining concept at Azura Selous is a relaxed experience and offers a la carte dining and 3 course lunches and dinners on a private basis.
The aim is for you to never eat in the same place twice and dining is all part of the experience, from breakfast in the bush to dining under the vast African skies by candle light.
Menus are based on what is fresh and available - it’s a simple understated affair. At dinner Azura offers a choice of dishes and can cater for all dietary needs and requirements with prior notice due to remote location.
Azura is quite remote and around 4 or 5 hours drive away from most of the other lodges in the selous - you are unlikely to see another car during your entire stay.
Expert guides take you on varied and exciting game drives where you experience the superb wildlife - each couple or family group enjoy their own private vehicle so you can enjoy the wildlife at your own pace.
All game drives are in custom made 4 x 4 vehicles that have open sides and raised seating, ideal for comfortable game viewing and photography.
On walking safaris you will be accompanied by highly trained and professional guides, offering you the the chance to get up-close and personal with the 'little five' as well as learn about the relationship between flora and fauna and the medicinal values of the plants that thrive in the reserve.
Being situated along the riverbanks of the Great Ruaha River means that Azura Selous is an ideal location for viewing endemic, aquatic and migratory birds.
The Selous is a spectacular birding destination with over 440 bird species being recorded. Some birds to look out for include the African Skimmer,White-crowned Lapwing, Spotted-flanked Barbet, Palm-nut Vulture, Chestnut-backed Finch-lark,Open-billed Storks, Golden Pipit and the Rock Pratincole.
Under the supervision of your guide you might also like to try your hand at fishing - The fast flowing Great Ruaha is home to many species of fish, including the Electric Catfish and sought after Tiger Fish.
Boating safaris are available when the Great Ruaha River in front of the lodge is high enough to facilitate boating safaris - this is a wonderful way to see the African game and wildlife from a different perspective.
Azura Selous offers guests a spa and guests can relax and unwind with a number of spa treatments. For complete relaxation these treatments take place on the deck of your tented villa overlooking the Great Ruaha river.
Azura Selous is a perfect choice for a family safari. There is a strong focus on welcoming families with children from age 6 upwards with a dedicated children’s programme above and beyond the game drives to educate about the Selous and its wildlife.
The children with the guides can do nature walks around the camp, or if over 12 do a walking safari with the parents and guides. They will also look for animal footprints and do castings to take home and remind them of their safari experience. Children can also try their hand at fishing in the Great Ruaha river in front of the lodge.
The lodge is unfenced and animals regularly walk in the camp - at night time all guests are walked by the guards safely back to your tented villa. For safety reasons children must be over 16 years old to have a tented villa without an adult staying in with them.
