KANGA CAMP – MANA POOLS NATIONAL PARK
Kanga Camp is a comfortable and rustic tented camp set in a remote part of Mana Pools National Park – a World Heritage Site.
The diverse area around the camp has multiple vlei lines, river systems of the Ruckomechi River and mixed woodland types from Mopane woodland to Jesse bush and riverine forests. Kanga Pan itself is the only known water source in the area available throughout the year making it a hub for wildlife.
The area is pristine and undeveloped and offers game drives, bird watching and walking safaris. An hour’s drive brings you to the Zambezi flood plains in Mana Pools and the camp works well with Zambezi Expeditions – a combination of camps which offers both an inland and river experience.
LOCATION
Kanga Camp is located in a private concession in the Mana Pools National Park. Access is via a 2.5 hour light aircraft flight from Victoria Falls or a 1.5 light aircraft flight from Harare, landing at Dandawa Airstrip with a 30 minute game drive transfer to camp
CAMP
The camp has six tented suites all raised on individual wooden platforms for an elevated view over the Kanga Pan. Each Meru-styled tent is simple yet elegant with floor-to-ceiling mesh windows to let in natural light and the tents are cooled by a light breeze and a fan. The tents have ensuite bathrooms with a flushing toilet, outdoor shower, hot running water and a secluded veranda.
There are also two Meru-style Tented Honeymoon Suites or Family Suites with which have a wraparound terrace facing the pan with seating and dining areas. These tents feature a roll-top bath on the adjoining deck, ideal for a romantic starlit bath.
The main area has a comfortable lounge and dining area offering uninterrupted views of a very active water hole. Relax in the upper deck lounge under the shade of a mahogany or sit on the deck below near the splash pool and watch the elephants enjoying the waterhole below.
The camp is powered by generator and solar power and there are in-room charging facilities and battery charging facilities in the main area.
ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE
Situated in the northern region of Zimbabwe on the southern banks of the Zambezi River Mana Pools National Park is a wildlife rich, biodiverse wilderness and is a paradise for walking and canoeing safaris.
You can expect to spot hippopotamus, crocodile, elephants and a wonderful array of aquatic birds within this UNESCO World Heritage Site and there’s a good chance of seeing packs of wild dog and lions hunting around waterholes where prey are seemingly easy pickings.
The landscapes are beautiful too, dotted with acacia trees whose shade becomes vital to the parks more than 12,000-strong elephant population in the dry season. The park offers the feeling of remoteness and extreme wilderness and if you visit in winter you’ll find yourself exploring amongst the highest concentration of wildlife in Africa.
Game Drives – safaris in this game-rich region offer the chance to get close to wildlife such as leopard and wild dog. During the dry season the pan is the only water in the area and game comes straight to the pan in front of Camp where fresh water is pumped throughout the day.
Walking Safaris – walking in Mana Pools is one of the closest experiences of being in the complete wilderness. Get to know the flora of the region or track lions on foot.
Armchair Safari – during the dry season relax on the upper deck lounge under the shade of the mahogany or sit on the deck below near the splash pool and soak in the uninterrupted views of Kanga Pan’s watering hole as the animals come to you – the perfect armchair safari.
The Hide – a highlight for photographers, Kanga’s unique hide offers a beautiful way to experience nature from a safe, immersive vantage.
