Sue Preater, owner and Managing Director of Tracks Safaris visited Ker & Downey latest offering in June this year – flying in by helicopter!
Maxa’s opening has been a resounding success. This is an environment that inspires adventure and fosters a deep connection to the breathtaking landscape. Lazy mid-afternoons on the Jackalberry hammock between activities and campfire stories after long days of exploration assure a rejuvenating and enriching experience for all who visit. The Ecopool with its unique, nature friendly design and tranquil ambience has received glowing feedback.
This year, Botswana has seen higher than normal rainfall, boosted by heavy precipitation in Angola’s Bie Plateau. As a result, water levels in the Delta are significantly higher than in previous years. A substantial volume of this water is flowing down the eastern side of Chief’s Island, where Shinde is located. Remarkably, areas that have remained dry for decades are now inundated—creating an extraordinary natural event. Kim Nixon of Ker & Downey gives further insight into this dynamic system in his April 2025 update on YouTube.
While these changes necessitate adjustments to activity planning, seeing the Okavango Delta during such an exceptional period is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The transformed landscape, coupled with the beauty of water-based wildlife viewing, promises an unforgettable adventure at a time of continued renewal. Maxa’s ethos of “Expedition” is thriving. Guests are embracing walking, driving, and mokoro adventures. A highlight has been exploring the sparkling waters of the Okavango by foot, where golden sandbanks and long shallows offer a safe and scenic spot to unwind after an afternoon of discovery.
Recent wildlife highlights include a large male lion near camp, a resident leopard making regular appearances and even an elusive Pel’s fishing owl on the neighbouring island. There have been frequent sightings of serval and a nest of bushbabies. An active Wild Dog den with many puppies has offered incredible entertainmen. The seasonal rise in floodwaters has drawn elephants and large zebra herds back to the expansive grassland plains.
We are pleased to offer Maxa’s Pay 4/Stay 5 nights special offer, valid from 01 November 2025 through 15 March 2026. This is a wonderful opportunity to include Maxa in your tailored itinerary – don’t miss out!
