India Leads the World in Tiger Numbers

Tigers once roamed all over Asia, but now they are only found in 13 countries. Sadly, due to human activity like hunting, the global tiger population has dropped by 97% in the last 100 years. Now, the remaining tigers call only the following 13 countries home: India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Russia, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Each year Global Tiger Day on 29th July brings attention to the incredible work to protect tiger populations in these countries.

India continues to set the global benchmark for tiger conservation. As of 2025, the country is home to 3,682 wild tigers across 58 tiger reserves, accounting for nearly 75% of the world’s wild tiger population. This marks a dramatic increase from just 1,411 tigers in 2006 and highlights the success of long-term conservation initiatives like Project Tiger, stronger anti-poaching enforcement, and habitat connectivity efforts.

Madhya Pradesh’s Madhav National Park in Shivpuri District has officially become India’s 58th tiger reserve in early 2025, following its tiger reintroduction program which began in 2023 with multiple tigers brought in from Satpura, Bandhavgarh, and Panna reserves. Covering approximately 354 km², the reserve encompasses dry deciduous forests populated by species such as tigers, leopards, wolves, chinkara, nilgai, and crocodiles, with eco‑tourism features like Sakhya Sagar Lake and George Castle.
