Travels in Botswana, June 2025

Sue Preater, founder and owner of Tracks Safaris has been travelling in Botswana this week. Travelling at a pace not expected of our clients, Sue is visiting 14 camps in 14 nights to keep Tracks Safaris knowledge base bang up to date on one of Africa’s greatest wildlife destinations.

Wednesday 4th, First stop Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Vic Falls is a great entry point for Botswana, avoiding the longer route via Johannesburg then Maun and opening up the opportunity for a little R&R before  travelling on. Look who Sue met here – “the most gentle elephant with a gorgeous hairy trunk. He swiped the elephant pellets out of my hand with uncanny grace – I don’t think he was as besotted with me as much as I was with him”.

This encounter was made with an interesting organisation that you might like to read more about: https://www.elecrew.org

Saturday 7th June, Scoops Owl at Okuti

What a fabulous welcome at Camp Okuti this morning – lots of singing, dancing and a gorgeous little scoops owl who was so sleepy he didn’t fly away!. Set overlooking the papyrus lined Moanachira River in the Moremi Game Reserve – I can’t wait to explore Moremi over the next few days.

Sunday 8th June, Leopard at Xakanaxa

Really enjoyed a surprise barge lunch floating along the serene Maunachira River and our greeting at Xakanaxa Camp choir was vibrant. Xakanaxa is perched on the banks of the Khwai River on the Xakanaxa Lagoon, in the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve, and is a rustic camp with great charm and character with amazing wildlife. The leopard we saw today was simply stunning!

Sunday 15th, Wild Dogs at Little Vumbura

Today, after an exhilarating flight over the amazing scenery of an Okavango Delta in full flood and a speedboat ride through hippo channels, Sue arrived at Little Vumbura Camp. Set on a tiny palm island in the middle of the Delta, this was to be home for just one night. This tented camp beautifully combines luxurious amenities with a true sense of wilderness. The wildlife highlight of this visit was certainly the wild dog viewing. Sue was able to get some great pictures with the help of her expert driver guide.

Tuesday 17th June, Helicopters and Hornbills

What a fabulous 24 hours! A light aircraft flight over the Delta and a helicopter flight into camp to be greeted by more wild dogs. An afternoon safari and dinner under the stars. Morning safari, visit a brand new camp and then jump on another helicopter, drop off at the airstrip for a 40 min scenic flight across the Delta and on to another camp for one night! All washed down with another dinner under the stars – wow!

Thursday 19th June, Thank you Botswana

Time to go home after a phenomenal and productive trip to wonderful Botswana. Starting and ending in Victoria Falls I have been rehabilitated by a gentle bull elephant, had coffee watching the Falls, visited 13 camps and lodges in 14 nights, flown on 7 light aircraft and 2 helicopter flights. I have been lucky to have met so many inspiring and talented guides and staff members, witnessed awesome wildlife, and enjoyed dinner parties every night with people I would otherwise never meet!

Thank you Botswana – you never disappoint!
