Get to know founder and owner, Sue Preater

A lifelong passion for travel

Sue Preater established Tracks Safaris in 2010 after completing a master’s degree in business, Tourism and Sustainability and with a young family at home. A lifelong passion for travel evolved into a passion for creating extraordinary journeys for her three sons. Adventures in the Galapagos, the Amazon, India, China and, of course Africa led ultimately to the founding of a business that would build on this love of travel.

Sustainability and giving back

Extensive studies in tourism and business took Sue to Burma, the subject of her first-degree dissertation. The complexity and politics of sustainable tourism was brought into sharp focus during that visit. The belief that tourism should benefit local communities, often living in remote locations with fragile ecosystems, motivates the use of operators with similar focus.  Sue carefully selects camps and lodges which work in parallel with local communities and wildlife conservation organisations. These camps actively put financial assistance back into communities, support anti- poaching organisations and support wildlife conservation.

It is always worth it

In her 20’s Sue took on a trans Africa truck expedition, travelling across the continent from Togo to Kenya, exploring Benin, Cameroon, Nigeria, CAR, then Zaire and across to Burundi. An eventful trip began by landing in Togo as civil war broke out. Sue got out of Togo intact but didn’t make it to Kenya. After contracting an aggressive form of malaria, Sue flew back to the UK where she was rescued at the airport by her father and rushed to hospital for an emergency blood transfusion.

Connected to the people and the locations

This early experience of Africa did nothing to dampen Sue’s enthusiasm for the great continent. Sue now travels between 3 and 4 months of every year to Africa, the Indian Ocean and the sub-continent. Often with a punishing schedule of a different camp every night, Sue has experienced 100’s of different camps and lodges, slept in the tents, tasted the food and, most important of all, been out on safari with the drivers and guides. Tracks Safaris recommendations come from Sue’s deep and personal connection to the people and the locations.

Appreciation of family and solo travel

Sue has travelled with family and knows the special requirements of entertaining young boys and teenagers. Sue also travels solo regularly and has an appreciation of the needs of the single traveller. However, you plan to travel it is likely that Sue has experience of the challenges and pitfalls, and how to overcome and avoid them.

Regular exhibitor at travel shows

Sue founded Tracks Safaris to be a family business. Husband, Jon supports Sue on stand when exhibiting at travel shows such as Destinations Show and The Luxury Travel Show in Olympia, London. These wonderful shows give Sue the chance to meet existing and new customers and are a highlight in the annual calendar.

Maintaing a great work life balance

Tracks Safaris office is in West Somerset in a rural location between the Quantock Hills and Exmoor. The office is housed in a converted stable block. The working day at Tracks Safaris is bookended by walks in the surrounding countryside with Sue’s great love, Bruno the German Wirehaired Pointer. Sue always carries her mobile phone with her and is happy to walk and talk.
