The island of Zanzibar – known locally as Unguja – lies just off the Tanzanian mainland in the Indian Ocean and is part of the Zanzibar Archipelago – numerous small islands with the two main islands being Unguja and Pemba. A melting pot of culture Zanzibar is a fascinating finale to your Tanzania safari offering beautiful beaches, spice farms, some excellent diving, World Heritage status Stone Town and culture in bucketloads.
Access to Zanzibar is a simple flight from Nairobi, Mombasa, Arusha or Dar es Salaam. Adding on a few days of relaxation after a safari is very easy and we highly recommend a few nights in Stone Town to explore followed by time to relax on one of Zanzibar’s idyllic beaches. Zanzibar conjures up images of exotic spices and stunning beaches – a land of dhows plying the waters full of exotic cargoes and a darker history of slave trading. Arab and Portuguese traders visited the region, and it was controlled by Omanis in the 18th and 19th centuries. Britain established a protectorate in 1890 that became an independent sultanate in December 1963 and a republic after an uprising in January 1964. In April 1964 Zanzibar joined Tanganyika to form a new republic that was renamed Tanzania in October 1964. The capital of Zanzibar is known as Stone Town and is a World Heritage Site.
Today, Zanzibar is a stunningly beautiful, lush green island which offers a wide variety of accommodation from basic beach guest houses set on the beach to Arabic styled, opulent 5 star retreats. Beaches ring the island and the shores are protected by a reef with world class diving. There is lots to do whilst on the island – a visit to Stone Town will reveal the island’s turbulent history and varied culture. One of Zanzibar’s main industries is farming spices – a visit to one of the many spice farms growing cloves, nugmeg, cinnamon and pepper is facsinating and educational.
Enjoy the sea on a dhow cruise complete with lunch or swimming with wild dophins, or snorkel and dive the beautiful reefs teeming with exotic fish and corals. Josani Forest is home to the endemic zanzibar red Colobus Monkey … or simply relax and enjoy the powder white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees and the warm, tidal seas.
