Pemba Island lies to the north of Zanzibar, about 20 minutes by air and is a wonderful island to escape to for a little rest and relax after your safari. Pemba is almost totally unspoilt and there are just two lodges of note which are at opposite ends of the island – this really is a little slice of peaceful heaven!

Life at the lodges revolves around the sea and if you are a keen diver we would recommend either lodge which both have superb dives sites within an easy boat radius. If a beautiful soft sand beach is important to you we would recommend Manta Resort – the beach at Fundu Lagoon is a little more rustic.

Pemba as an island is more undulating and densely vegetated with natural forest and plantation than Zanzibar – it was often referred to by early Arab sailors as El Hethera, ‘the green’. With cloves being the main crop grown here tourism and fishing have now become specialities. Its beaches are pristine, vast and empty and an 800m deep channel splits Pemba Island from the continent making this one of Africa’s greatest deep-sea fishing destinations.

On the island itself, walking excursions through forests reveal many native species including spectacular ferns and giant trees. There are also cycle-rides, dhow trips, many archaeological sites to explore and afterwards fresh lobster, fish and other tropical and spicy delicacies to enjoy. There are a number of inexpensive local guest houses to stay at here, however, we recommend either Fundu Lagoon in the south or Manta Resort in the north of the island.

We have visited Pemba Island and stayed at the lodges and dived the seas around Pemba and would be happy to use our expertise to assist you in planning your Tanzanian holiday.
