Safari Types
Montane or Sub-Montane Grassland – open grassland and rolling hills with terrestrial orchids and even patches of Protea (best experienced in Nyika National Park on The Great Malawian Journey).
Montane or Sub-Montane Forest – small patches of evergreen forest with large buttressed trees, ferns and epiphytic orchids (best experienced in Nyika National Park on The Great Malawian Journey).
Brachystegia Woodland – miombo type broad-leafed woodland dominated by Brachystegia species (best experienced in the southern parts of Liwonde National Park from Mvuu Lodge and Mvuu Camp, but also present in Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve and the lower elevations of Nyika National Park, both visited by The Great Malawian Journey).
Acacia Savannah / Woodland – open savannah with dotted acacia or a mosaic of acacia woodland mixed with other species (best experienced in the extreme north of Liwonde National Park from Mvuu Lodge and Mvuu Camp)
Mopane Woodland – stands of mature mopane woodland across level areas as well as low lying hills and rocky outcrops (best experienced in the central and northern parts of Liwonde National Park from Mvuu Lodge and Mvuu Camp)
Lake shore and Open Water – granite boulders, sandy beaches, bays, lagoons and open lake (Wooded islands combined with this habitat best experienced at Mumbo and Domwe Islands and also from Kaya Mawa on Likoma Island. Mainland combined with this habitat best experienced at Chinteche.)
Riverine Woodland – comprised of tall well developed riparian woodland together with Borassus palms on the floodplain fringe (best experienced in Liwonde National Park at Mvuu Lodge and Mvuu Camp)
Some sought after bird species associated with each habitat type are as follows:
Montane or Sub-Montane Grassland – Denham’s bustard, wattled crane, red-winged francolin, white-necked raven, mountain nightjar, red-rumped swallow, blue swallow, white-headed saw-wing, red-tufted malachite sunbird and augur buzzard
Montane or Sub-Montane Forest – cinnamon dove, Schalow’s turaco, bar-tailed trogon, moustached green tinkerbird, mountain babbler, white-starred robin, white-chested alethe, Sharpe’s akalat, olive-flanked robin, white-winged apalis, Fülleborn’s black boubou
Brachystegia Woodland – pale-billed hornbill, miombo pied barbet, wood pipit, white-winged babbling starling, red and blue sunbird, chestnut-mantled sparrow-weaver, Stierling’s woodpecker
Acacia Savannah / Woodland – brown-breasted barbet
Mopane Woodland – Racket-tailed roller, Lillian’s lovebird
Lake shore and Open Water – African fish eagle, gull-billed tern
Riverine Woodland – Böhm’s bee-eater, Livingstone’s flycatcher, African skimmer, Pel’s fishing owl, white-backed night-heron, spur-winged plover, collared palm-thrush. African Pitta has been recorded very occasionally in this habitat near Mvuu Lodge.
