RICHARD’S RIVER CAMP – MARA NORTH CONSERVANCY
Perfectly situated on the banks of the Njageteck River and surrounded by 70 acres of private land, Richard’s Camp allows for total privacy and exclusivity. The Ngoyanai springs provide permanent water and drawing in large numbers of animals to the area around camp both day and night.
The camp is also particularly known for its resident lion pride which can often been seen hunting right in front of the camp and roaring during the night.
With only 6 tents and one large family tent, this camp is ideal for individuals as well as exclusive groups who wish to experience the Masai Mara in a personal intimate setting. Beautifully appointed with furnishings and fabrics collected by owner Liz on her travels – the result is a casually luxurious tented camp, combining exceptional wildlife with a contemporary ‘Out of Africa’ experience.
LOCATION
Richard’s River Camp is situated on the banks of the Ntiakatek River, in the Mara North Conservancy.
Access is via scheduled light aircraft transfer to Mara North Conservancy airstrip and Camp is a 40-minute drive from the airstrip.
CAMP
The luxury tents are spacious and beautifully furnished in comfortable safari style and have 24-hour solar lighting.
The tents are a customized design which allows for significant size, air flow and light. Raised on concrete platforms with low wooden steps the tent walls are high with netted windows and a low roof pitch, therefore creating a fantastic airflow and good ventilation throughout. Beige in colour, the tent ceilings have been covered with hand printed fabric which makes the tent interior brighter compared to the standard dark green canvas in other properties.
The rooms consist of a large bedroom area, behind which there is a dressing room followed by the bathroom. The dressing rooms can accommodate up to two extra beds each – therefore each standard tent can sleep up to four people.
Each tent is ensuite with a flush loo and shower area with hot and cold running water and soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion provided. The power system does not support hairdryers, shavers or any other high wattage device.
Tent no. 8 is usually reserved as the ‘Honeymooners’ tent as it is furthest away from the rest of the camp therefore making it a bit more secluded and private.
The camp has WIFI in the mess tent and dining area and offers a basic laundry service.

GIVING BACK
For the last three generations, the Roberts families have played an integral part for conservation in Kenya. In 2011 Richard and Liz founded the Mara Elephant Project, which is instrumental in human-wildlife conflict mitigation and anti-poaching through the collaring, monitoring and tracking of elephants. With a dedicated team, MEP is achieving great results in reducing elephant poaching; please see the MEP Facebook page ‘Mara Elephant Project’ for current updates.
Most camp staff are of the Masai tribe and their families live within the Mara. The guides at the camps are also Masai and therefore know everything there is to know about the area. Chefs have been trained in international cuisine at various kitchens across Kenya and have amassed a wide range of culinary skills and cooking methods.
RICHARD’S RIVER CAMP IS OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND
THE CAMP WELCOMES FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN OF ALL AGES AND HAS A FAMILY SUITE.
THE CAMP IS UNFENCED AND SMALLER CHILDREN SHOULD BE SUPERVISED AT ALL TIMES.
