The Republic of the Congo and Central African Republic, both former French colonies, are 2 of the 6 countries across which the Congo Basin expands. Second in size to the mighty Amazon, the forests of the Congo Basin contain the greatest number of mammals, primates – including the endangered western lowland gorillas – birds, amphibians, fish and swallowtail butterflies in Africa. More than 1,000 species of bird can be found here. The basin is a total of 3.7 million km2 and is home to some of the largest undisturbed stands of tropical rainforest on the planet, in addition to large wetlands.

This is an exciting new itinerary combining the wonderful Odzala National Park in the Democratic of Congo with Sangha Lodge in the Central African Republic using a safe flying route and a 4 hour motorboat access between Odzala and Sangha in the CAR. Every traveller visiting the region will be putting funds directly back into wildlife research and the local communities.

Fly into Brazzaville – the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo – where we recommend staying a night at the comfortable Raddison Blu. You will then fly to Odzala National Park the next day and spend 2 nights at Lango Camp enjoying forest and bai walks before transferring to Mbuko and on to Sangha Lodge for 7 nights bordering the Dzanga-Sangha National Park.

  • Dzanga Baï: Lose track of time from the platform, witnessing hundreds of animals as they visit this mineral-rich clearing.
  • Pangolin research: Be inspired by the research and conservation work done at Sangha Lodge to save pangolins.
  • Hunt with the Ba’Aka: Understand an ancient way of life as this tribe allows you into their daily routine.
  • Explore more: See trees taller than you have ever imagined in the Valley of the Giants, rare picathartes bird species, waterfall hikes.

After your Sangha experience you will transfer back to Mboko in Odzala National Park for one night before flying back to Brazzaville.
