Serian perfectly captures the essence of its name which means ‘peaceful, calm, serene’ in Masai language and was designed to be a retreat from the bustle of contemporary life and a chance to experience Africa in a traditional tented camp.
The camp lies in the private Mara North Conservancy and the beauty of this location is that only 10 other camps have access to the Conservancy.
Serian consists of six vast marquees perched on beautiful hardwood decking – one of which is a family suite.
Each is unique in its own way, but all are furnished with four-poster wrought-iron double beds flanked by wooden bedside tables and writing desks. The style is defined by tasteful simplicity combined with life’s little luxuries.
Adjoining bathrooms include a shower as well as an enormous bathtub, twin basins, and a flushing toilet. Hanging swathes of cotton and canvas walls offer complete privacy.
The thatched mess area has a stunning view over the Mara River and the Siria escarpment, and is the perfect spot to share a sundowner and stories of the dwindling day.
Join Adrian and Roisin by the fireside, and watch as the stars take over the sky. Comfy furniture, smooth wooden decks and an indoor fireplace give a warm feeling of home away from home. Sit back, put up your feet and succumb to the chilled ambiance and good company that constitutes Serian’s nightlife.
From June to November the Mara is a hotspot for watching the wildebeest and zebra as they make their crossings of the mighty Mara River.
Experiencing a crossing is truly breathtaking: the hum of energy is palpable as the herds start to stampede toward the river. Watching them explode across the water, the dust, the thundering noise, the panic and trauma as they struggle against the current and crocodiles is a unique experience.
The rest of the year is no less thrilling: enormous numbers of big cats roam the savannah and the Masai Mara is often said to offer some of the best game-viewing in Africa.
The cornerstone of a safari experience at Serian is that each group has their own open-top safari vehicle, and their own dedicated guide and spotter.
The freedom this grants you is key to getting the most out of your stay: go where the day takes you, be it a full day out with a picnic in the wilderness, or a lazy siesta back in camp before that ice-cold sundowner.
The area also lends itself to great short walking safaris - set off with the first light in the company of one of Serian's experienced Masai guides.
