Mihingo Lodge – Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda

Mihingo Lodge is a luxurious, family-owned safari lodge set on a private 200-acre ranch bordering Lake Mburo National Park. With its elevated position atop a rocky kopje, the lodge offers breathtaking views over the savannah, lakes and acacia woodlands. It is known for its unique design, exceptional service, and the wide variety of activities available in and around the park.

Accommodation

Mihingo Lodge features twelve tented rooms, each individually designed and positioned to maximise privacy and views. Raised on wooden platforms and covered with thatched roofs, the tents blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Inside, guests enjoy spacious bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, solar-powered hot water, and private verandas overlooking the bush. Some tents are perched on rocky outcrops with sweeping views, while others are nestled in the forest or by a waterhole where wildlife gathers. With space for only around twenty-four guests, Mihingo maintains an intimate and exclusive atmosphere.

The Experience

A stay at Mihingo Lodge offers a rich variety of activities both inside Lake Mburo National Park and on the surrounding ranch. Game drives reveal zebra, impala, buffalo, giraffe and eland, while guided walking safaris allow guests to explore the bush on foot. Night drives provide opportunities to spot leopard and other nocturnal animals, while boat trips on Lake Mburo showcase hippos, crocodiles and prolific birdlife. Mihingo is particularly renowned for its horseback safaris, offering a unique and exhilarating way to explore the savannah. Mountain biking and running trails are also available for active travellers. Cultural visits to nearby Bahima homesteads provide insight into traditional pastoralist lifestyles. Back at the lodge, guests can relax by the infinity pool with panoramic views, enjoy gourmet meals prepared with fresh ingredients, or unwind with a massage in the tranquil bush spa.

Location

Situated on the edge of Lake Mburo National Park, Mihingo Lodge commands spectacular views across the park’s rolling hills, valleys and lakes. The park is home to over 350 bird species and a wide diversity of mammals, making it a rewarding safari destination. Its location just four hours’ drive from Kampala also makes it one of the most accessible parks in Uganda – perfect as a stand-alone retreat or as part of a longer safari circuit.

Conservation and Community

Mihingo Lodge is a leader in eco-friendly tourism. Solar energy provides power and hot water, rainwater is harvested, and much of the lodge was built using local materials. The lodge employs staff from surrounding communities and supports a number of conservation projects, including the Mihingo Conservation Foundation which works to reduce human-wildlife conflict and promote environmental education in local schools. By staying at Mihingo, guests directly contribute to the protection of Lake Mburo’s ecosystem and the well-being of its neighbouring communities.
