CHINZOMBO - SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK
Chinzombo is a stunningly luxurious camp set in a game rich area of the South Luangwa National Park. Relax on your veranda overlooking a sweeping curve of the Luangwa River and let the bellowing hippos lull you to sleep. Wake up with the eye of an elephant just outside your villa.
Named after a type of tree which grows near camp, Time + Tide Chinzombo’s natural building materials and vintage accents blend modern style with a traditional bush safari camp. With just 6 suited tents including a two bedroomed family tent the level of accommodation is significantly higher than most other camps in the valley and is ideal for honeymooners or those willing to pay for the extra comforts. Do note that when the river is low there are some steep steps down to the river to board the boat to cross the river for activities and this camp may not suit those who are less active.
Chinzombo is a good starting point for your safari offering some rest and relaxation before heading deeper into the bush. Or alternatively add a few nights on at the end of your safari instead of heading to a beach!
Chinzombo Camp is located in the central part of the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. Access via Mfuwe Airport and the camp is around 1 hour’s drive from the airport.
Chinzombo has just six spacious guest villas including a two-bedroom, two-bathroom family villa which rest beneath ancient msikzi trees. The villas have extravagant accommodation with big, comfy beds enveloped in mosquito netting with ‘cooling breeze’ air conditioning over the bed. There is a well-appointed ensuite area with freestanding bath and shower. Each tent has a private pool and soaking tub with panoramic views over the river and its abundant wildlife.
The villas feature canvas, timber and reed and are accented with leather and raw linen. Each stretches out onto a shaded veranda where you can watch wildlife or unwind with an in-villa spa treatment.
The main lodge is beautifully furnished with expansive decks overlooking the river, comfy lounge chairs and African artifacts. Relax on the riverfront sun deck with a book from the open-air library and enjoy dinner under the stars made with produce grown by the camp or take a dip in the pool. In the evening pre and post dinner drinks can be enjoyed around the firepit under the stars.
WILDLIFE AND ACTIVITIES
This is one of the most game-rich areas of South Luangwa National Park but it is one of the busiest as it is close to the park gates.. Take a boat across the river for a game drive, safari walk or boat cruise (seasonal) to catch sight of lions, leopards, elephants, wild dogs and other wonderful wildlife. Birding is superb in the park with over 450 species.
Day night game drives – depart early morning and in the afternoon after afternoon tea. The vehicles are accessed via a boat across the river and there are some steep steps down to the boat. Once on the other side it is a short walk to the game vehicle.
Walking safaris – discover the area with your guide looking for all the smaller things you miss when in a game vehicle. See where a leopard pulled its prey up a tree, hear about lion ants and look for animal tracks on the ground.
In villa spa treatments – enjoy a massage or facial in your own room inbetween safari activities.
Sleepout Under the Stars - fall asleep under a canopy of a million twinkling stars, listening to the susurrations of the night-time bush. A cosy bedroll, bush loo and culinary team ensure that this experience is as comfortable as it is memorable.
Boating safaris (seasonal)
