SANCTUARY SUSSI AND CHUMA – LIVINGSTONE

Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma is built on a dramatic bend of the Zambezi River in the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park and is 12km upstream from the world-famous Victoria Falls.

Named after Dr. David Livingstone’s faithful friends Sussi and Chuma the lodge is located in one of the most beautiful parts of the Zambezi amidst Jackalberry trees and Phoenix palms, providing wonderful views, peace, quiet and exclusivity.

Accommodation is in twelve Sussi tree-houses which are connected by wooden walkways and two private Chuma houses which have two bedrooms. The lodge has a swimming pool and Spa and there is a good selection of included activities.

The lodge welcome all children of all ages at the Chuma houses and 6 years and older at the Sussi Tree houses. Children’s activities can be arranged including tailor-made child-friendly game drives, traditional clay / Plaster of Paris toy moulding, sundowner storytelling and a visit to Nakatindi School. The lodge is flexible with meals and meal times for children.

LOCATION

Sussi and Chuma Lodge is located on the banks of the Zambezi River just outside Livingstone in Zambia and is a 25 minute road transfer from the airport.

LODGE

There are 12 luxury tree-houses which are built into the canopy of majestic ebony trees lining the riverbank and connected by wooden walkways. Facilities include air conditioning, ensuite bathrooms with a bathtub, private viewing deck, mini-bar, mosquito nets, overhead fans and hairdryer.

The two Chuma Houses offer a spacious lounge and dining room area, outdoor deck and private plunge pool. Facilities include air conditioning, mosquito nets, hair dryer, room safe and mini bar. Ensuite facilities include a bath and in-door shower.

The main lodge building has a raised bar, lounge area and deck, open air dining area, curio shop and swimming pool. Revitalising spa treatments are also available from the treatment room overlooking the Zambezi. Complimentary WIFI is available in the main areas and electricity supply is a combination of silent packed generator and battery system.

ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE

The Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is one of Zambia’s smallest park but provides excellent game viewing including an array of birds. The park has a relaxed atmosphere due to the lack of predators.

There are a huge amount of activities bookable in the area at extra cost but the following activities are included in your stay:

Game Drive – the lodge is set on the edge of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. The park has elephant, impala, giraffe, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, baboon, vervet monkeys and zebra in large numbers and an exciting array of birds, including some Southern African specials like Peters Finfoot. You may also be lucky enough to see a rare sighting of the wild dog that on occasion pass through the park.

Tour of Victoria Falls – the lodge is just a short drive away from the world famous Victoria Falls and offers guests a walking tour. Excluded in the rate is the Heritage Fee which is payable by guests directly at the lodge.

Walking Safari – there can be few more thrilling ways to experience and understand African wildlife, the bush and ecosystem as a whole than by being on foot on a walking safari and the experience offers a completely different perspective to a safari vehicle.

Canoeing on the Zambezi – enjoy a two hour canoeing excursion on the Zambezi River in the morning or afternoon. The activity will start from the lodge and can be combined with either a game drive or a boat cruise. Canoeing is offered all year but is weather dependent. Dry bags will be provided for valuables. Minimum age is 15 years.

Sundowner Cruise – is a great way to spend a few hours before drifting back to the lodge, a warm shower and delicious dinner. Your guide will take the boat through a series of grade 2 rapids before finding a spot to beach for a break and a sunset cocktail.

Local School & Village Tour – Nakatindi village is located six kilometres from Livingstone and five kilometres from Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma. Through Sanctuary Retreats Philanthropy the lodge sponsors various projects aimed at improving education, conservation, health and enterprise in the village. You will have the opportunity to visit these projects and meet the people supported by them. Visit Nakatindi Community School which is responsible for the education of 442 pupils or Chipego bike shop where you can hire bicycles to use to tour the village.

Fishing – the fishing season generally opens on 1st March each year and closes annually from the 1st December until March. All fishing is on a strict Catch and Release policy. Please note that when camp is full all boats are used for the evening sunset cruise.

THE LODGE WELCOMES FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN OF ALL AGES IN THE CHUMA HOUSES AND AGED 6 YEARS AND OLDER IN THE SUSSI TREEHOUSES. CHILDREN AGED 15 YEARS AND YOUNGER ARE REQUIRED TO SHARE WITH THIER PARENTS.

A PRIVATE VEHICLE MUST BE BOOKED FOR CHILDREN AGED 5 YEARS AND YOUNGER AND NO CHILDREN UNDER 12 YEARS ARE PERMITTED ON WALKING SAFARIS. BABYSITTING AND CHILDMINDING IS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST AND IS CHARGED AT A NOMINAL FEE
