SABLE ALLEY – KHWAI PRIVATE RESERVE – OKAVANGO DELTA
Sable Alley is a stunning camp perched right on the edge of a lagoon in the private Khwai Reserve in the Okavango Delta. The camp is beautifully furnished and a wonderful base from which to enjoy the outstanding wildlife on game drives, walking safaris and on the water.
Enjoy the space and serenity of an exclusive private reserve on the fringes of the Okavango Delta with only a handful of camps in over 200,000 hectares. There are sweeping views of the wildlife-dotted lagoon and floodplain from each tent – this is world-class game viewing without leaving camp.
By staying at this camp you will be part of conservation in action: the Khwai Private Reserve is a private concession from which proceeds go straight back into the eco-tourism initiatives of the area and to the surrounding communities.
LOCATION
Sable Alley is located in the 200,000 hectare Khwai Private Reserve that borders both the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park and set within the Okavango Delta.
CAMP
There are just 12 tents at Sable Alley – 9 double/twin guest tents, a honeymoon tent and 2 family tents. Sable Alley is spacious, sophisticated and really quite stylish. Each canvas-walled suite is huge at 55 square metres and has a comfortable mini-indoor seating area, writing desk, double bed and some seriously Afro-chic décor.
Slide open the screen doors at the front for uninterrupted views of the lagoon or enjoy watching wildlife from your deck. At the back of the tent you will find your ensuite, with two basins, an indoor shower and a flush loo. And if you fancy washing off the dust from the day outdoors, no problem – there’s an outdoor shower with a view too.
The communal areas are designed around the spectacular vistas. Watch the happenings at the lagoon from the bar, G&T in hand, from the outdoor fire pit, or from a comfortable sofa in the lounge. At night dinner is served either in the indoor dining area or alfresco on the deck accompanied by twinkling of the stars.
In the heat of the day cool off at the swimming pool and sun deck – both unique spots from which to watch the hippos emerge from the lagoon.

ACTIVITIES
Sable Alley is set in the Khwai Private Reserve is in the secluded northern reaches of the Okavango Delta and offers astonishing diversity both in terms of landscape and wildlife. Vast, flowing floodplains, pockets of verdant forests and areas of enormous Leadwood trees; pockets of lily-covered lagoons and meandering waterways. And in the middle of it all is the fast-flowing Khwai River.
The reserve is bordered by the world-famous Moremi Game Reserve to the south and the vast Chobe National Park to the east. Together the three reserves are part of the greater Okavango Delta World Heritage Site. The floodplains around Sable Alley are the perfect location for enormous herds of elephant and buffalo and whilst the Khwai River is the main water source in the area the waterways that spindle out through the grasslands attract game from far and wide and there’s no shortage of zebra, giraffe, antelope and other plains game. The concentrations of predators here are considerable – prides of lion, leopard and cheetah and the area is also home to a good number of endangered wild dog.
In the winter dry season from June to October the Okavango Delta is in flood. The rivers and waterways are full and flowing making this the best time of year for water-based game viewing from traditional mokoros and boats. The summer season brings the much-longed-for rains and alongside beautiful sunsets and thunderstorms you’ll notice plenty of newborn wildlife on the plains. Birding at this time of year is also excellent as the migrants return from their various corners of the globe.
Game Drives – enjoy morning, afternoon, sun-downer or evening night drives through the private concession.
Mokoros – drifting silently through lily pads on a mokoro safari is one of the greatest pleasures of a water-based safari. Enabling you to reach all the corners of the Delta that a vehicle simply can’t reach, this cruise makes for a peaceful view of the reed-filled water channels. Please note that this activity is dependent on the water levels.
Boating – with a higher vantage point than the mokoro, this alternative water-based activity lets you float along the waterways and rivers on a boat watching wildlife and birds. This activity is dependent on water levels.
Walking Safaris – accompanied by a guide, you have the opportunity to walk in the concession looking at the finer details of the Delta’s flora and fauna.
