MOMBO CAMP – MOMBO CONCESSION – CHEIFS ISLAND – OKAVANGO DELTA
A Wilderness Safaris Camp set in arguably one of the best big wildlife veiwing areas in Botswana – Mombo boasts enormous concentrations of plains game and predators and is arguably considered one of the best areas for game-viewing in Africa.
LOCATION
Mombo Camp is located on the northern tip of Cheif’s Island – the largest landmass in the Okavango Delta.
CAMP
Newly rebuilt, the concept of Mombo is to maintain the traditions and history of the camp as well as to celebrate the reintroduction of black and white rhino into the wilds of Botswana.
The nine spacious tents have sweeping views over a floodplain teeming with wildlife. Inside, a sitting room, separate bedroom and bathroom, indoor and outdoor showers and a bathtub with copper and brass finishings all add to the Wilderness ideal of responsible luxury.
The camp is 100% solar powered with electricity and hot water provided via solar panels and inverters. Waste water (sewage and grey water) is treated in an Above Ground Sewage Plant, ensuring that the water is clean before being allowed to enter the natural environment. In order to reduce our use of bottled water, reverse osmosis filtration is done on site to provide guests with high-quality drinking water. Like all Wilderness camps, this is managed and monitored against very strict in-house environmental standards, so only approved eco-friendly detergents and chemicals are used.
ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE
Mombo’s mix of habitats attracts large herds followed by numbers and varieties of predators. The Mombo Concession has huge concentrations of plains game and predators – these include all the big cats, of which lion sightings are frequent. Leopard, spotted hyaena, large herds of buffalo, elephant, giraffe, blue wildebeest, Burchell’s zebra and more abound, while cheetah and wild dog sometimes move through the area. It is here that black and white rhino were first reintroduced into the Delta, to be seen occasionally.
Activities include morning and afternoon game drives, walking safaris, pampering massages in your room or on a private deck, discover more on a back of house tour and experience a delicious, freshly-made brunch enjoyed out in the bush after an action-packed game drive.
GIVING BACK
Mombo Concession’s isolation and sheer diversity of suitable vegetation makes the area ideal for delicate reintroduction projects and for the greater purpose of wildlife conservation such as the Botswana Rhino Reintroduction Project. This ongoing project was initiated as a joint initiative between Wilderness Safaris and the Botswana government in 2001. Since then breeding nuclei of both white and black rhino have been returned to the wilds of Botswana and there is a Rhino Monitor is based at camp.
Mombo is a Long Run Alliance member – meaning the camp is dedicated to sustainability through the 4Cs (conservation, community, culture and commerce) and a leader in sustainable tourism, biodiversity conservation, community development and cultural stewardship.
Mombo hosts Children in the Wilderness – a life skills educational and environmental programme for children who live in the villages around the conservation areas.
