JONGOMERO – RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
Jonomeru is a very comfortable little camp in a remote area of the Ruaha National Park. The camp blends beautifully with its surroundings and is tucked below a dappled riverine canopy on the banks of the Jongomero sand river – a natural pathway for animals in search of water.
Positioned on one of the meanders with sweeping views of the bank beyond the camp has an open wooden terrace shaded by a high thatched roof and filled with sumptuous sofas and striking furniture made of reclaimed dhow wood.
Dinners are sometimes taken in the dry riverbed which is lit up by lots of little lights and is quite magical. Enjoy 4 x 4 safaris, game walks and the opportunity to go really wild with a night or two of flycamping!
LOCATION
Jongomeru is set along the banks of the seasonal Jongomero River in the south of Ruaha National Park in Tanzania.
CAMP
Jongomero has just eight large and well-appointed tented suites built on raised wooden platforms under enormous thatched roofs that also encompass a spacious private veranda which overlooks the riverbed.
Snuggle under warming quilts in an eight-foot wide dhow wood emperor bed; fall asleep to the hum of Africa beyond the canvas; and wake up to the morning tea tray and animals ambling past your mosquito net windows – the quintessence of luxury in the wilds!
ACTIVITIES
Ruaha holds one of the greatest populations of elephant in any African park. Buffalo gather in large herds, as well as giraffe, zebra, impala, eland, hippo, crocodile, lion and leopard. The rarer, lesser-seen creatures can also be found, including sable and roan antelope, dikdik, greater and lesser kudus, Grants gazelle and honey badgers. It is second only to Selous Game Reserve for the largest population of wild dog.
Game Drives – the road network around camp was primarily developed by the camp’s knowledgeable guides and therefore perfectly placed for game drives – enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in 4 x 4 open sided vehicles – most with just 4 seats.
Game Walks – are offered to guests aged 16 or over and are probably the most fascinating way to truly experience the wonders of Ruaha.
Out of the vehicle and being on foot is a wonderful experience – set out at a leisurely pace and enjoy the smaller animals as well as the birdlife, insects, flora and fauna. The walking season begins mid to end of June until the beginning of the rains in November or early December. The exact start date is finalised between the camp and TANAPA and is dependent on the bush conditions and visibility.
Fly Camping – during the day walk and discover the hidden depths of Ruaha while for one or two nights you can sleep under a canopy of stars after sharing stories around the camp fire and showering under the trees. This is the perfect adventure for a minimum of two to a maximum of six guests and is bookable from 15th July to 15th November.
JONGOMERU IS CLOSED APRIL AND MAY EVERY YEAR
THE CAMP ACCEPTS CHILDREN AGED 6 YEARS AND OLDER AND THERE IS A TWO CHILD LIMIT (AGES 6 – 11) IN EACH CAMP AT ANY ONE TIME. IF YOU BOOK THE CAMP PRIVATELY THEN NO CHILD POLICY APPLIES.
