GREAT PLAINS SELINDA CAMP – SELINDA RESERVE – LINYANTI
Set in a beautiful, pristine wilderness area Selinda Camp rests on the banks of the Selinda Spillway as it enters the Linyanti River. The private 136,000-hectare Selinda Reserve boasts elephants by the thousands, regular sightings of the Selinda pack of African wild dogs as well as the famous Selinda Lion Pride recently feature in the National Geographic film “Birth of a Pride” by Dereck and Beverly Joubert.
Selinda Camp represents the meeting place of three cultures; European, Mokololo and Bayei. Spears, shields and an African version of Robinson Crusoe is the theme through the camp and its architectural design elements centre around water, air, earth and fire all of which ground the design.
LOCATION
The camp is located in the private Selinda Reserve in the Linyanti area of northern Botswana.
CAMP
The camp has three expansive guest tents each covered under thatch and with large en-suite bathrooms, large private veranda and private swimming pool. Each tent is unique, designed with its own colour palette and theme. A fifth element metal is also incorporated into the design and different textures have been used: rope, rooms under thatch, hammocks, lots of space, nautical elements and salvaged wood.
The Selinda Suite consists of a two-bedroom tented villa and operates exclusively – guests enjoy their own private vehicle, safari guide, chef, manager/butler and entrance to their residence.
WILDLIFE AND ACTIVITIES
The safari drives, walks, boating, tracking, birding and other activities are designed to showcase the best wildlife the area has to offer – from leopards, elephants, hippos, wild dogs and lion and some of the 200 or more bird species in the area.
Game drives (day & night) – Duba Plain’s Toyota Land Cruisers are aptly named ‘Swamp Vehicles’ due to their extra-high suspension and absolutely huge tyres uniquely designed to traverse the floodplains for us. These are open-sided, canopied and customised for photographers (fold-down screens, raised roofs, photographic bars, multi-plug inverters). While the focus remains on the most comfortable times of day (early to mid-morning and late afternoon to evening) for drives it is very common in Duba Plains to spend full days out in the field having brunch delivered to the vehicles because the wildlife is so good. Very often safaris will continue into the night in search of nocturnal species.
Guided Walks – another huge benefit of staying within a private concession is the ability to appreciate the stunning landscape on foot without the noise of engines. Usually early morning or evening is the best time – wear good walking shoes, a hat and neutral coloured clothing and take binoculars. Walks are led by licensed guides with firearm training.
Motorized Boating – zipping through the Okavango Delta’s network of waterways is an invigorating way to get a sense of the scope of this huge wetland. Boating is a seasonal activity, typically between May and October but varies seasonally.
Catch-and-Release Fishing – this is a great activity during mid-day siesta. During January and February there is a moratorium on fishing. Catch-and-release fishing only.
Young Explorers Programme – Duba Plains Camp offers a full syllabus of bush craft skills for our young explorers. This is a complimentary programme and an extensive pack will be offered to eager children on arrival so they can learn about animal calls, how to track wildlife, and other facts and figures about the wild. At the end of a child’s stay the child will become a Young Explorer and Conservation Ambassador – ready to go out and tell the world about what they have learned and what they too can do to help protect this beautiful environment.
