CAMP
With only 6 tented rooms and 2 family tented rooms, Little Sable is an intimate camp with an emphasis on hospitality and comfort. Each room is a cosy retreat – all have wonderfully large king-size beds (that can also be twins), writing desks, cool ensuite bathrooms and private verandas with views across the shimmering grasslands.
At the main area you will find a sunken lounge and fire pit – the perfect spot for your morning coffee or an early evening G&T. Located just in front of a favourite grazing spot for zebra and elephant, it’s a fabulous wildlife-watching base during siesta time too. ACTIVITIES
In the Khwai Private Reserve is in the secluded northern reaches of the Okavango Delta and offers astonishing diversity both in terms of landscape and wildlife. Vast, flowing floodplains, pockets of verdant forests and areas of enormous Leadwood trees; pockets of lily-covered lagoons and meandering waterways. And in the middle of it all is the fast-flowing Khwai River.
The reserve is bordered by the world-famous Moremi Game Reserve to the south and the vast Chobe National Park to the east. Together the three reserves are part of the greater Okavango Delta World Heritage Site. The floodplains around Sable Alley are the perfect location for enormous herds of elephant and buffalo and whilst the Khwai River is the main water source in the area the waterways that spindle out through the grasslands attract game from far and wide and there’s no shortage of zebra, giraffe, antelope and other plains game. The concentrations of predators here are considerable – prides of lion, leopard and cheetah and the area is also home to a good number of endangered wild dog.
In the winter dry season from June to October the Okavango Delta is in flood. The rivers and waterways are full and flowing making this the best time of year for water-based game viewing from traditional mokoros and boats. The summer season brings the much-longed-for rains and alongside beautiful sunsets and thunderstorms you’ll notice plenty of newborn wildlife on the plains. Birding at this time of year is also excellent as the migrants return from their various corners of the globe.
Game Drives – enjoy morning, afternoon, sun-downer or evening night drives through the private concession.
Mokoros – drifting silently through lily pads on a mokoro safari is one of the greatest pleasures of a water-based safari. Enabling you to reach all the corners of the Delta that a vehicle simply can’t reach, this cruise makes for a peaceful view of the reed-filled water channels. Please note that this activity is dependent on the water levels.
Boating – with a higher vantage point than the mokoro, this alternative water-based activity lets you float along the waterways and rivers on a boat watching wildlife and birds. This activity is dependent on water levels.
Skybeds – spend a night sleeping under the stars at the Skybeds platforms – it’s certainly a night to remember! (Must be pre-booked; Skybeds is only open from the 1st April to the 31st October).
Bird Watching – bring your binos, your bird book and your Natural Selection birding checklist to enjoy a birding safari in the Okavango Delta. Your safari guide will show you spectacular birds, and is at the ready to answer all your birding questions.
Khwai Private Reserve Ranger Experience, Khwai Village visit and helicopter flights are available at additional cost.
GIVING BACK
Concerned about the wildlife in Khwai Private Reserve, Natural Selection have been equipping rangers with the tools they need to be more effective on the ground. This includes binoculars, rain suits, cameras, two-way handheld radios and tablets for recording sightings. Some of our rangers have also taken to two wheels, using motorbikes to help patrol inaccessible areas more effectively.
Ranger training has been key in successfully looking after this very large reserve. Not only are our rangers trained to patrol, but they know how to collect population data, manage invasive species and even protect endangered trees.
LITTLE SABLE IS OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND
THE CAMP WELCOMES FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN AGED 6 YEARS AND OLDER
