Okaukuejo Camp – The Heartbeat of Etosha
Okaukuejo Camp is the oldest rest camp in Etosha National Park and one of its most famous – for its floodlit waterhole where you can witness majestic wildlife—lions, elephants, and even black rhinos—drink side by side, often long after sunset. This is more than a place to sleep—it’s a front-row seat to Namibia’s raw wilderness drama.
Location
Located just 17 km from Anderson Gate at the park’s western entrance, Okaukuejo is easily accessible and perfectly positioned for game drives deep into Etosha’s expansive salt pans. Its proximity to prime wildlife viewing routes makes it a central and strategic base for exploring the park.
The Camp
The camp offers a variety of accommodation options to suit all types of travellers. From luxurious two-bedroom waterhole chalets with balconies overlooking the action, to bush chalets, double rooms, family units, and a shaded camping area—Okaukuejo is both versatile and atmospheric. Facilities are clean and functional, with en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning in most units, tea/coffee stations, and braai (barbecue) areas.
The standout feature is the floodlit waterhole, where guests gather each evening to witness a parade of wildlife coming to drink. A tall stone watchtower adds a unique viewpoint to take in the surroundings, especially at sunrise and sunset.
Activities & Wildlife
Guests can enjoy guided morning and afternoon game drives into Etosha, as well as exclusive night drives that offer the rare chance to observe nocturnal species. However, the real highlight is often just sitting quietly by the camp’s waterhole, where sightings of elephants, black rhinos, lions, and giraffes occur regularly—all under the watchful glow of the lights.
Facilities & Guest Experience
Despite its government-run character, Okaukuejo is well-equipped. Facilities include a full-service restaurant, bar, swimming pool, curio shop, petrol station, and even a small information centre focused on park conservation. The camp is lively, sociable, and an essential part of the Etosha experience.
Guest Information
Open year-round, Okaukuejo is particularly popular during Namibia’s dry season (June to October), when animals gather in large numbers at water sources. It caters to families, couples, and independent travellers seeking an affordable yet thrilling way to experience Etosha. Booking well in advance is essential for the best rooms, especially those facing the legendary waterhole.
