Kalahari Farmhouse – Rustic Elegance in a Desert Garden
Kalahari Farmhouse is a tranquil retreat that feels like a secret garden in the desert. With charming whitewashed buildings, lush lawns shaded by palm trees, and a working farm atmosphere, this lodge is both homely and full of heart. It’s the ideal stopover for travellers looking to relax in comfort, connect with Namibia’s farming heritage, and savour the slow rhythm of the Kalahari.
Location
Located in the village of Stampriet in Namibia’s fertile Auob River Valley, Kalahari Farmhouse sits at the edge of the red Kalahari sands. This green oasis is just a short drive from Mariental and easily accessible for travellers making their way between Windhoek and the south. Despite its desert surroundings, the lodge’s gardens flourish thanks to abundant underground water.
The Lodge
The lodge features 11 spacious and tastefully furnished chalets, each with en-suite bathrooms and verandas opening onto the garden. The old farmhouse has been lovingly restored into a cosy main building with a thatched dining room, a welcoming bar, and a sparkling swimming pool. Fresh produce for the kitchen comes from the on-site Self-Sufficiency Centre, which supplies vegetables, meat, and dairy to several Gondwana properties.
Experiences
Guests can relax under the trees with a book, cool off in the pool, or visit the nearby Kalahari Anib Reserve for guided game drives. The lodge’s peaceful setting makes it ideal for contemplation, photography, or casual strolls through the greenery. What sets Kalahari Farmhouse apart is its emphasis on sustainability: the working farm produces food for Gondwana’s entire southern circuit and promotes eco-conscious practices.
Practical Information
Open all year. Great for couples, solo travellers, and families seeking a unique and restorative stopover. Breakfast and dinner are served daily, with lunch available on request. Visit between March and October for the most pleasant weather. Kalahari Farmhouse is proof that the desert can bloom—with a little care and a lot of soul.
