AMOKORO SONGA LODGE – KINIGI – VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
Nestled in a small village outside the town of Kinigi, Amakoro Songa Lodge has just eight luxurious cottages designed and built to take advantage of the serene surroundings and is located just 10 minutes’ drive from Volcanoes National Park Headquarters making it absolutely ideal for gorilla and golden monkey trekking.
The Lodge gets its name from the black volcanic rocks that characterise the mountains that are home to the Mountain Gorillas. The lodge is set on a seven-acre plot with beautifully manicured lawns and surrounded by the Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabinyo mountain volcanoes.
LOCATION
The lodge is located in just outside the small town of Kinigi and just 10 minutes’ drive from Volcanoes National Park in the north west of Rwanda. Access is by a 2.5 hour road transfer from Kigali.
LODGE
Nested between the volcanoes and the Volcanoes National Park the lodge has 8 cottages all furnished with rustic elegance fusing local and modern furnishings that create warmth and comfort. The spacious ensuite rooms are equipped with comfortable beds and a cosy fireplace and you can enjoy a massage in your room.
The main area of the lodge has an inside lounge with a fireplace and a dining area, and meals can be served outside in the gardens on warmer evenings. Outside there is a fireplace which is a great place to enjoy a drink before or after dinner or while watching the traditional Intore Dance Troupe.
The lodge has beautiful gardens with views to the mountains and volcanoes, and grows its own organic vegetables, herbs and spices in the lodge gardens. Food at the lodge reflects both local Rwandan and international dishes
ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE
The primary activity at the Lodge is without a doubt gorilla and golden monkey trekking and the lodge is just 10 minutes’ drive to the Park Headquarters where the trekking begins making it very convenient given the very early start required.
You can visit the villages around the lodge and take part in traditional activities like tree planting, community cleaning and traditional dancing. The lodge organises community walks that include home visits and a story moment with the oldest resident who shares stories dating back to pre and post colonial times. The community walks always end with a picnic and a private moment for the guests to enjoy nature.
Other activities include cycling, mountain climbing and trekking, bird watching and cave adventures which can all be booked at the lodge.
