&BEYOND GRUMETI SERENGETI TENTED CAMP – SERENGETI
&Beyond Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp is set in the remote Western Serengeti
and offers a superb wildlife experience in this incredibly picturesque area which typically has far fewer tourist numbers than many other areas in the park. The camp is situated on a by-water of the Grumeti River known for its dramatic wildebeest crossings and enormous Nile crocodiles. Tucked into a strip of riverine forest you can enjoy the antics of the hippo resident in the pool in front of the camp and the spectacular pied colobus monkeys which are found only in this area of the Serengeti.
Every year, in June and July the migration passes through the Grumeti region and hundreds upon thousands of wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores cross the Grumeti River risking the jaws of huge crocodiles. During the remainder of the year the area offers exclusive game viewing far from the crowds with the open western Serengeti plains attracting cheetah and large prides of lion, as well as clans of hyena that number up to a hundred individuals. The riverside thickets are the ideal dwelling place for leopard and elephant. This area also lies in the path of the annual movement of exceptional numbers of topi antelope.
LOCATION
&Beyond Grumeti Serengeti is located in the western Serengeti in northern Tanzania.
CAMP
Rustic yet sophisticated, this camp has ten tented suites which feature shaded private veranda’s that look out over the Grumeti River and its resident hippo. Big day beds make this the perfect place to while away the afternoon. The interiors combine hues of wildebeest grey with accents of natural stone and bone, and stone shower towers are open to the sun and stars.
Guest areas include open-fronted sitting and dining areas and a domed bar which are adorned with glass pendants and whimsical touches. Spacious decks are perfect for enjoying sundowners overlooking the river and the camp’s rim-flow swimming pool provides a view of the seasonal hippo pools below. Meals can be enjoyed in a variety of dining areas and traditional fires known as jikos produce mouth-watering aromas.
Two of the tents cater for families travelling together and are connected by an enclosed walkway that allows easy access between the tents while maintaining complete privacy.
ACTIVITIES
Game Drives – included. Situated in the Western Corridor of the Serengeti National Park wildlife viewing in the Grumeti area is exceptional throughout the year. The camp’s location on a tributary of the Grumeti River means that it is ideally positioned for sightings of river crossings when the migration is in the area. However, the wildlife experience can be even just as good when the migration is not nearby with a high density of year-round wildlife and relatively few tourists encountered in this part of the reserve. Game drives are in open 4×4 safari vehicles with canvas canopies.
With the Grumeti River providing a permanent water source the area is particularly rich in predators with massive lion prides and extensive clans of hyena numbering up to a hundred frequently spotted. The river also attracts large herds of buffalo and elephant, while the open plains are the ideal habitat for cheetah. On riverside drives you can see the massive crocodiles that the area is renowned for and birdlife is super with a good number of endemic species. The thickets near the camp are home to colobus monkeys which cannot be seen anywhere else in the Serengeti.
Children visiting the camp can take advantage of the fun-filled and interactive WILDChild programme that offers various activities such as (and amongst many) tracking animal footprints with a guide, joining a mouth-watering pizza party, making a fire the Maasai way, playing soccer with the staff and for older children, spear throwing or shooting bows and arrows.
