ACTIVITIES
Apart from its spectacular natural setting, the park is famous for its unusual tree-climbing lions and the vast elephant families it was established to protect. The shores of the lake, encrusted with pink flamingo, attract more than 400 species of birds, many of them waterfowl or migrants. Large herds of buffalo, cheetah, Masai giraffe and impala roam the lake’s shores and the forested valley slopes. Troops of several hundred olive baboon appear alongside Sykes monkey and short-eared galago. Cape clawless otter, Egyptian mongoose, hippo and klipspringer are other park residents.
Game Drives – each morning and afternoon you will set off in the company of your guide and tracker team in an open 4×4 safari vehicle and your guide will help you explore the many diverse habitats of the park – acacia woodlands, grassy floodplains and tall forest. Highlights include Lake Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions and family herds of elephant.
Children visiting the camp can take advantage of the fun-filled and interactive WILDChild programme that offers various activities such as (and amongst many) tracking animal footprints with a guide, joining a mouth-watering pizza party, making a fire the Maasai way, playing soccer with the staff and for older children, spear throwing or shooting bows and arrows.
There is a good choice of experiences available at extra cost:
Night Drives – you may also choose to go out on a night game drive to discover the nocturnal life of the area.
Maasai Village Visit – experience the unique culture and fascinating way of life of these tribal people. You are invited inside the low traditional homes known as enkaji made using branches and twigs overlaid with a mixture of soil, cow dung and ash. Several enkaji are arranged in a circle around a central livestock pen or kraal. The Maasai women, renowned for their exquisite beaded jewellery, will have a selection of handiworks available for sale.
Treetop walkway – the Treetop Walkway offers a series of suspended bridges flanked with netting for safety which snake through a dense forest canopy to various viewing platforms. Reaching heights of up to 18 metres (59 feet) the platforms provide wonderful views of the surrounding wilderness.
