SANCTUARY KUSINI CAMP – SOUTHERN SERENGETI
Set on a rocky outcrop – or kopje – Sanctuary Kusini is a semi-permanent tented camp in the vast southern Serengeti. Each of the 12 tents have secluded private showers and terraces and overlook the plains where zebras, cape buffalo, wildebeest, lions and leopards are a common sight all year round. The camp is especially good to visit from mid-December to March when the wildebeest are calving.
Relax in the communal tent with its own library, sitting room and veranda. Bush sundowners are served on the giant boulders of the kopje close to the camp.
LOCATION
Sanctuary Kusini Camp is located in the southern Serengeti in northern Tanzania. The camp has a private airstrip – Serengeti South Airstrip (SGS) – which can be accessed by daily scheduled light aircraft flights and private charter flights. Transfer time from the airstrip to camp is 30 – 45 minutes.
CAMP
Accommodation is offered in twelve double tents scattered around the main kopje. Each spacious tent has ensuite facilities with an indoor shower. Large private decking with comfortable furnishings extends in front of each tent with views of the surrounding bush below where zebra, buffalo and lion are a common sight year-round. The tented rooms feature mosquito netting, hairdryers and in room safe and you will have a personal tent attendant to look after your every need during your stay.
The dining area, lounge and library are housed in the main area, which has spectacular views from its wooden deck and the adjacent kopje and there is a bush boutique for curio shop purchases. Complimentary wireless internet access is available in the main areas and electricity supply is a combination of silent packed generator and battery system.
ACTIVITIES
Sanctuary Kusini is well placed to see large predators – lion and cheetah; with leopard often lying in the kopjes nearby camp. Between January and March, the great migration returns to the area and wildebeest and zebra cover the plains as they give birth to their young. The treeless plains in this area provide the perfect habitat for cheetah that has made this area of the park their permanent home. Key wildlife includes lion, the elusive leopard, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, striped and spotted hyena, wildebeest and impala.
Game Drives – the camp’s experienced guides know every inch of the territory around the camp and this remote corner of the vast eco-system never disappoints – buffalo, elephant, hyena and giraffe, all can be seen close to the camp. Bird life is particularly good on the forest edge where woodpeckers and brightly coloured kingfishers can often be seen.
Serengeti Cheetah Project – a unique activity has been developed where guests can contribute to the Serengeti Cheetah Project by monitoring the cheetah of this vast national park. Venture out into this remote region of the Serengeti with your expert guide in search of cheetah. Your guide will introduce you to the cheetah’s habitat and teach you how to correctly identify and photograph the cheetah you spot and record their behaviour and location. Your contribution to the project could uncover new movement patterns and aid development of conservation programs. Since the camp developed the cheetah watch activity in 2009 guests have supplied valuable information on over 60 different cheetah, many of which had not been seen for years. In recognition, the Cheetah Project has named one long-lost cheetah “Kusini”.
Cosmic Safari – the African night sky offers some of the best star gazing in the world. In the evening sit on a comfortable cushion up on top of the main kopje or around the campfire and enjoy the universe. With a green laser pointer to show you the way embark on a walk through the stars and get lost in the beauty of the night sky. Weather conditions and moon phases must be taken into consideration when planning your perfect cosmic safari.
Sundowners – are the classic end to any day on safari – and the sundowners at Sanctuary Kusini are simply sensational. Climb to the top of the main kopje, relax on large pillows and view spectacular sunsets with cocktails and snacks.
