MOKOLWANE – SOUTHERN OKAVANGO DELTA
Mokolwane is set amongst a sprinkling of Mokolwane palms in the Xudum concession, ucked away in 180 000-hectares of wilderness in the southern Okavango Delta. The area is teeming with herds of elephant, buffalo and all the Okavango predators. This is leopard country. These territorial cats love it here so much, that the area boasts the third highest density recorded anywhere in Africa. With so much space and so much action, it’s no surprise that renowned wildlife filmmaker Brad Bestelink has chosen to base himself here. His recent Netflix documentary Living With Leopards was filmed in the area and has been nominated for five 2025 Emmy Awards .
Mokolwane is a special little camp, big on adventure and perfect for exclusive use groups. Also being the only camp for miles around, it is a great place to breathe in the stillness and solitude.
LOCATION
Mokolwane is located in the Xudum Concession in the south of the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana.
CAMP
Mokolwane has just 7 guest tents – including one family tent – set on stilts 10 feet above the ground amongst the shade of fig, jackalberry and ilala palm trees and wild mangosteens. Elephants love it here, with a buffet of palm nuts, berries, and wild fig to feast on as they drop off these tree giants.
Each tented room is based on a wooden deck and has an ensuite bathroom and comfortable interiors. Located on the Matsebi river system you can enjoying spectacular views of the bush and waterhole from your tent during siesta time.

WILDLIFE AND ACTIVITIES
Between 5,000 to 10,000 elephants are in the concession at various times of the year and the buffalo herds that come through are also in large numbers. Giraffe and zebra are joined by wildebeest, and all the antelope from kudu, lechwe, bushbuck, tsessebe, to name but a few. As a result there is a lot of predator action in the concession with a high density of resident leopard competing with strong populations of lion, wild dog, hyena and cheetah for prey.
The smaller species like bat-eared fox, side-striped and black-backed jackal, African wild cats, honey badgers, meerkat and mongoose are also frequently seen in abundance. As night falls, enjoy sightings of all the nocturnal creatures, from porcupine, aardwolf, aardvark, civet and genet.
This is an exciting concession for bird lovers too. From wattle cranes, Pel’s fishing owl, martial eagles, to huge flocks of quelea preyed on by falcon, there’s plenty to tick off on the bird list.

Mokoro Trips (seasonal activity)
This is one of the most iconic Okavango Delta experiences. Wind your way around the crystalclear waterways on mokoro. Your experienced guide, will pole you amongst the lily pads and weaving sandbanks, to show you the ebbs and flows of this incredible eco-system.
Scenic Helicopter Flights (additional cost)
Enjoy a scenic helicopter flight over the Okavango Delta. This is an incredible opportunity to appreciate the vastness of the Delta when seeing it from above. From your seat, door off (or on), you’ll be able to spot game, take exceptional photos and follow the waterways and animal pathways that shape this ancient wilderness.
GIVING BACK
One of the latest additions to Natural Selection’s conservation education outreach is Lessons in Conservation (LiC). This youth-led organisation seeks to expose children to the beauty of their local environment, with their over-arching mission to raise awareness about conservation in rural communities across Africa. The hope being that they inspire a love for nature and foster environmental stewardship among Africa’s rural youth.
The LiC team teach the children basic ecological principles as well as the importance of conservation, and importantly they train and support local ambassadors to run the programme into the future. The participating children also have an opportunity to witness wildlife first hand on an educational excursion into reserves. In the reserves they enjoy game drives, bush walks and a variety of other educational activities. To date, we’ve supported two projects in Botswana by Lessons in Conservation: one in Khwai and another in Moreomaoto.
