Lion Camp is a luxurious and privately owned safari lodge set in a quiet area in the northernmost reaches of the South Luangwa National Park.
Inside the camp you will find beautifully furnished lounges, expansive wooden decks, a swimming pool overlooking the plains and stunning suite interiors with evening breeze cooling units.
The camp is built on the edge of an oxbow lagoon which attracts a wide variety of wildlife. Game viewing in and around camp is spectacular with lions, leopards, wild dogs, large herds of elephant and buffalo, many hippo, incredible bird viewing and plentiful sightings of the unique Thornicroft’s Giraffe, Cookson’s Wildebeest and Crawshay’s Zebra.
With a diverse habitat to discover including areas of savannah, woodland and the meandering Luangwa River this well placed camp offers game drives, walking safaris, birding and stargazing.
The camp is located in the northern area of the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. Access from Lusaka is via around an hour by aircraft to Mfuwe Airport where you will be met and transferred approximately 3 hours to camp.
All of Lion Camp’s 10 luxurious timber, canvas and thatch suites have been designed to make the most of the spectacular views around camp and each suite has a private deck looking over to the plain where you can enjoy game viewing throughout the day.
The suites are connected to the main area by a raised and winding wooden walkway. The main lodge is a spacious, open and airy thatched area with private nooks, seating areas and a pool.
The 8 luxury suites have canvas walls and a thatch roof. During the day the netting at the front of the tent can be tied back to access a shaded private deck directly from the bedroom. Bathrooms are off to the side to provide more privacy whilst ensuring an unobstructed view out. Evening breeze cooling units have been installed for maximum comfort in the hotter months. These units along with the rest of the camp are solar-powered.
The two private deluxe suites are set at prime locations at the end of the camp and are similar in design to the luxury suites but are larger and have secluded outdoor bathtubs.
The Lagoon Suite can be either twin or double and an extra bed can be added to accommodate a young child.
The Sunset Suite is the honeymoon suite and has one king-size bed and a large wrap-around deck with 180 degree views of the plain. It is the furthest suite from the main area of the camp and its seclusion makes it perfect for honeymoon couples.
ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE
Flowing for over 800km from its source in the remote hills of North Eastern Zambia into the Zambezi, the Luangwa River is the lifeblood of the Luangwa Valley. As it winds along the valley floor creating oxbow lagoons and open plains, alluvial deposits have resulted in rich soils capable of supporting high-quality grassland, woodland, and forest. Lion Camp is situated at an oxbow at the top end of Lion Plains in the most northern section of the South Luangwa National Park.
Walking safaris and game drives at Lion Camp are expertly led by professional and experienced guides. Located far away from the Mfuwe Gate - Lion Camp offers a quieter and more exclusive safari experience with an abundance of game and few other safari vehicles.
Game Drives - all safari activities are led by qualified guides who will educate and enlighten you in the secrets of the park. Game drives are conducted in open Land Rovers and the camp also offers game drives by spotlight after the sun goes down (returning to camp by 19:30). Drives by spotlight give you the chance to see nocturnal and animal activity.
Walking Safaris - are a very different option. They bring you in touch with the wilderness and tend to focus more on the minutiae of the park and the eco-system. It is an unforgettable experience striding out in country where you are on the same footing as a lion or elephant. All walking safaris are led by experienced and qualified walking guides and are accompanied by an armed scout.
The camp also offers special interest safaris such as bird watching and stargazing
LION CAMP IS CLOSED FROM NOVEMBER THROUGH TO THE 19TH MAY EVERY YEAR
