SAVUTE SAFARI LODGE – SAVUTE – CHOBE NATIONAL PARK
Savute Safari Lodge is set in the south west region of Chobe National park on the banks of the Savute Channel close to the Savute marshes.
A highlight of this camp is the fabulous views over the Savute Channel and especially the pumped waterholes which are visited by huge herds of elephants and other game especially during the dry season. You can sit and watch the wildlife drinking during dinner from the decking in the main area and afterwards from your room – the last time I stayed group of lion could be seen drinking and hunting for most of the evening.
The camp has 13 comfortable chalets and offers a good, comfortable and friendly base base to visit the fabulous wildlife in and around the Savute Marshes and the ancient San rock art at nearby Gubatsa Hills.
LOCATION
The camp is located in the Savute area of south west Chobe National Park in northern Botswana.
Access is via a light aircraft flight to the airstrip where you are met and transferred to the camp via a game drive which is around 25 minutes.
CAMP
The camp has just eleven thatched luxury chalets built of local timber and one family room which has two double bedrooms. The chalets have been elegantly furnished in calm neutral tones to blend with the natural environment and feature expansive private decks with table and lounge chairs, a combined bedroom and lounge area and ensuite facilities.
The main area is a two-storey thatch-and-timber building housing a lounge with comfortable leather, wood and wicker sofas, a library and a bar. The lodge has a shaded viewing deck, an al fresco dining area and swimming pool with spectacular pool loungers – ideal for watching the varied wildlife – including the resident elephants – as they make their way to the Channel to drink. A campfire is lit in the evening at the firepit providing a good focus point for predinner drinks.
24-hour power supplied by solar plant, backed up by generator. There are 220V AC plug’s in the guest rooms to charge electrical appliances. A guest laptop is available with basic internet connection in the library – no WIFI is available in camp.
ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE
Stretching from the Linyanti River all the way to Savute Marsh, the winding waterways of the Savute Channel have pumped life into the western section of Chobe National Park for thousands of generations. However, this unpredictable channel has a fascinating history of flooding and drying up independently of good rainy seasons and flood levels elsewhere. The Savute region and the Savute Marsh in particular is renowned for its intense predator encounters and exceptional game viewing making it one of Botswana’s most popular wildlife destinations.
Game Drives – from the lodge explore the Savute region in open 4×4 safari vehicles. Many safaris will incorporate a visit to the Savute Marsh to give you a chance to see the historic presence of the Savute Channel at the marsh against a backdrop of teeming wildlife.
Cultural Experience – you can also enjoy a visit to the ancient San rock paintings at Gubatsa Hills – a small hilly outcrop which forms a prominent landmark in the otherwise flat landscape.
GIVING BACK
The CARES philosophy is the foundation on which Desert & Delta Safaris is built, highlighting our core values in developing human potential and building a sustainable tourism model.
Established in 1982, Desert & Delta Safaris is one of the most successful safari operators in Botswana. Their philosophy and core values in supporting people and protecting the natural heritage of Botswana is at the forefront of how they run their business.
Through a variety of initiatives, they support local communities, focused on creating career opportunities in the tourism industry.
Desert & Delta Safaris employs approximately 320 staff members within the eight safari lodges and the remote location of properties means access to medical care is a challenge, so they employ a full time company doctor. Run as a family practice, the company doctor conducts regular visits to each of the properties allowing him to get to know the staff individually to understand their specific medical needs as a GP but ensuring that the best medical advice and mentoring is freely available.
The company is eco-conscious, driving sustainable and innovative initiatives within daily operations which protect and limit the impact of business on the areas in which they work.
As members of Botswana Tourism, several of the Desert & Delta Safaris camps and lodges are EcoTourism rated, the highest status recognised by Botswana Tourism for sound sustainable tourism initiatives. This includes the usage of greywater treatment plants, careful waste management protocols as well as the use of sustainable building materials wherever possible.
