CANYON LODGE – FISH RIVER CANYON
Canyon Lodge is set in the beautiful, rugged desert environment close to Fish River Canyon in southern Namibia. The lodge is set amongst huge granite boulders and kopjes and offers a fusion of farmhouse flavour in a stunning natural setting.
Offering lots of character and charm, Canyon Lodge is just 20 kilometres away from the chasms Fish River Canyon – carved by millions of years of erosion. The main reception area is housed in a century old farmhouse and walkways lead to 30 natural stone chalets nestled amongst granite boulders. The lodge has a lovely swimming pool with expansive views over the desert.
Take a guided drive to the Fish River Canyon, join a Canyon Trail for an experience of a lifetime, follow the 4×4 Wildebeest Drive to view the plains animals, watch sunrise amidst the quiver trees, hike in the rocky hills or see the sunset from the adjacent kopje.
LOCATION
Canyon Lodge is located 20 km east of the Fish River Canyon on the C 37 in southern Namibia.
Access is via self-drive from Windhoek which takes around 6.5 hours.
LODGE
The lodge has 30 rooms including 25 standard twin Rooms, 3 standard triple rooms and 2 family rooms. All the rooms are nestled against granite boulders and the natural rocks are incorporated into the rooms. The rooms have twin beds, ensuite bathrooms with showers and air conditioners.
The family rooms are open plan and have 2 single beds and a double bed with an ensuite bathroom. One of the family rooms has a bath and the other a shower.
The reception and curio shop are housed in the old farmhouse and there is a restaurant and bar, tea and coffee making station and outside tables and chairs are arranged on the shady veranda overlooking the desert – perfect for drinks with a view!
The lodge has wonderfully kept lush green gardens and areas of grass and a large swimming pool is set beyond the chalets with sun loungers and towels and amazing views across the desert landscape.
ACTIVITIES
Excursion into the Fish River Canyon Area – experience the wild expanse of the Gondwana Canyon Park where the fences of ten farms were dismantled to recreate a Namibian Eden. Take a guided drive to the Fish River Canyon to be inspired by new perspectives or join a three or four day Canyon Trail for an experience of a lifetime.
Morning Hike – this hike is about 6 km and takes you right into Gondwana Canyon Park. You are accompanied by a guide who will share his knowledge about the fascinating desert landscape around the canyon. This tour does not go to the Fish River Canyon and is approximately 3 hours.
Sunrise Walk – drive to a spot with a grand view and watch the sunrise while enjoying coffee and tea. Afterwards walk back the short distance to the lodge. This tour does not include the Fish River Canyon and is approximately 1 hour.
Hike from the Village to the Lodge – a hiking trail takes you from Canyon Village up to a mountain plateau where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the vast plains adjacent to the canyon. At ‘Archway Rock’ you start to make your way back into the plain and to the lodge. Around 2 – 3 hours.
Canyon Drive – especially for guests who want a break from the wheel or those on a fly-in safari. You are taken to the two major lookout points along the Fish River Canyon. Your guide will tell you all about the canyon’s fascinating geology. Approximatley 3 hours.
Sundowner Drive in Gondwana Canyon Park – the 3 hour drive is the perfect opportunity for you to acquaint yourself with the geology, flora and fauna of the Gondwana Canyon Park. This tour does not include the Fish River Canyon and starts at Canyon Lodge or Canyon Village and is approximately 3 hours.
Sundowner Walk – you are invited to wrap up the day with a short excursion to have a drink and watch the sun go down.
E-biking (self-guided) – pedal through the Gondwana Canyon Park on an electrical bicycle in your own time and enjoy the pristine nature. Your self-guided tour starts at Canyon Roadhouse. A trail map is available at the reception. Guests must arrange their own transport to Canyon Roadhouse. Bookings only directly at Canyon Roadhouse. Around 4 hours, return before nightfall.
Canyon Under Canvas Sleep-out – experience a truly Namibian adventure in the raw nature of the Gondwana Canyon Park. The remoteness and absence of light pollution guarantees one of the darkest night skies in the world, making it ideal for stargazing. This privately managed park (126 000 ha) supports a variety of indigenous wildlife and fascinating flora like Quiver Tree and Hoodia. Sitting around the fire at night, listening to the sounds of nature makes this adventurous outing an experience of your lifetime. Min 2 and max 8 persons – book in advance.
