HYENA PAN – KHWAI PRIVATE RESERVE – OKAVANGO DELTA
Hyena Pan is set in the interior of the 200,000 hectare Khwai Private Reserve and is a comfortable and good value camp overlooking a lagoon with all the benefits of being in a private concession.
The camp is next to the only permanent source of water for miles around which is a magnet for wildlife and in particular elephant – you don’t even need to leave the comfort of your room to enjoy some wildlife-watching.
With only eight guest tents, the camp is small, comfortable and welcoming and a big attraction here is the camp’s ground level hide – brilliant for getting a little closer to the wildlife or taking some really close up photos.
In the evening you can sit around the campfire under a blanket of stars with a drink and listen to the sounds of an African night.
LOCATION
Hyena Pan is in the Khwai Private Reserve which borders Moremi Game Reserve, the Khwai River and Chobe National Park and is in northern Botswana. The flight to Khwai Private Reserve from Maun is approximately 35 minutes and then it’s an hour-long drive to Hyena Pan from the airstrip.
CAMP
Hyena Pan has just 8 tents all with ensuite bathrooms and indoor showers. One tent is wheelchair friendly and all tents have electronic safes to store valuables.
There is a spacious dining deck, several seating areas with large comfy sofas, a sun deck, an open air boma with camp fire and a pool deck with a small ‘splash pool.’
The waterhole is lit at night allowing game viewing from the comfort of the camp.
ACTIVITIES
Both the green and dry seasons in Khwai are good times to visit Hyena Pan. When the rains fall from December to March the area floods and you’ll find astonishing numbers of hippo, elephant and buffalo, accompanied by an array of water birds. The rains do however scatter the wildlife far and wide and you may need to travel a little further on game drives during these months to spot the wildlife. As the grass grows, it’s slightly harder to spot predators – but the wildlife is still there, and you can still get close to it!
In Botswana winter brings a scorching desert sun and the seasonal waterholes evaporate, whilst smaller ones dry up completely. At Hyena Pan the water remains and animals flock to the last droplets of water resulting in drama at the waterhole. June, July and August are traditionally the best times for game viewing in Botswana and September and October which are dry hot months before the rains can produce superb game viewing.
Game Drives – enjoy a morning game drive through the Khwai Community Area, driving along the banks of the Khwai River before spending the afternoon’s drive through the 200 000 hectare private concession.
Walking Safaris – join a guided walk from the camp and get a new perspective on your surroundings!
Underground Hide – spend time in the underground hide experiencing the wildlife of Khwai Private Reserve from a completely different vantage point.
HYENA PAN IS OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND
THE CAMP WELCOMES FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN AGED 6 YEARS AND OLDER. CHILDREN HAVE TO BE 12 YEARS AND OLDER TO PARTICIPATE IN WALKING SAFARIS.
