ASILIA KIMONDO CAMP – SERENGETI MOBILE CAMP

Kimondo Migration Camp splits the year between two sites in the Serengeti meaning guests are likely to see the Great Migration herds regardless of when they visit.

From July to October you can watch the wildebeest thunder across the Mara River risking being snapped up crocodiles. During the winter months the camp is moved to the lush southern Serengeti where the wildebeest gather in their hundreds of thousands to calve and graze.

LOCATION

The camp is always in the Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania but moves twice a year to be in the best location for the migration.  The nearest airstrips are Lamai in the north which is just over an hours’ drive from camp and Serengeti South which is around 25 minutes’ drive to camp.

CAMP

The nine canvas tents, including one family tent, have king-sized or twin beds with cast-iron frames, handwoven rugs and wooden furnishings. There are en suite bathrooms with outdoor bucket showers, a flushing toilet and hot running water. The lounger on your veranda is the perfect spot for a post-lunch snooze.

Kimondo Migration Camp has a1920s safari theme with traditional canvas tents and Moroccan-style furnishings. Handwoven rugs carpet the dining tent and burnished copper lanterns are set aglow in the evenings. You dine in the tent or under the stars before moving to the campfire to share safari stories.

All food, including freshly baked breads, biscuits and muffins, is prepared in camp. At breakfast, choose from a continental buffet or a full English. Lunch is a light buffet with salads and fresh vegetables. If you prefer, we can also pack a picnic to be enjoyed in the bush. Dinner is a three-course meal to enjoy with your fellow guests.

Kimondo Migration Camp is a great choice for families with young children. The camp does not offer a specific programme for children but welcome children over the age of 5 and an extra bed can be added your tent or request our family tent. Please note that we recommend children under 12 shares with an adult.

ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE

As a migration camp Kimondo moves with the seasons following the wildebeest herds around the Serengeti. The camp is closed in November and through the rainy season from April to June.

Northern Serengeti: July to October – over this key migration season the camp is in the north of the Serengeti to watch the wildebeest cross the Mara River from the Lamai Wedge. Besides wildebeest, zebras and antelopes, you can also spot the predators who prey on these massive herds.

Southern Serengeti: December to March – as the wildebeest come back across the river from Kenya the camp is moved to the lush grasslands in the south where animals gather to give birth and graze. You can often watch these herds right from camp as well as on game drives farther afield.

Game drives – game drives depart once per day first thing in the morning and again in the late afternoon. The camp has both open-sided vehicles with canvas roofs and closed vehicles with pop-up roofs and all vehicles come equipped with power points to keep your cameras charged and fridges to provide chilled drinks throughout the day.

Hot-air balloon rides – soar over the Serengeti in a hot-air balloon and get a wonderful view of the wildlife below. This special experience is at additional cost and weather dependent. Booking is essential.

Walking safaris – when the camp is in the north you can walk through the bush with one of the knowledgeable guides. This is a wonderful chance to take note of the less conspicuous natural wonders around you: birds and bees, droppings and spoor, leaves and flowers.

Cultural and community visits – in the north Kimondo is within driving distance of several villages. If you’d like to learn more about the local Kuria culture we can organise a visit to a nearby community where you can watch traditional dancing or shop for crafts and handmade souvenirs at a local market.

Photographic safaris – Sayari is home to one of our specially modified photographic vehicles and is available to Kimondo  guests when the camp is in the north. The open vehicle is equipped with beanbags, camera rests and 360° swivel seats

KIMONDO MIGRATION CAMP IS CLOSED MID MARCH – MID JUNE AND NOVEMBER EVERY YEAR

THE CAMP IS FAMILY FRIENDLY AND WELCOMES CHILDREN AGED 5 AND OVER
