ASILIA ROHO YA SELOUS – SELOUS GAME RESERVE

On a small peninsula overlooking Lake Nzerakera Roho ya Selous is in the heart of the Selous Game Reserve – the largest reserve in Africa and home to one of the biggest populations of wild dogs on the continent.   It is a wildlife hotspot with giraffes and elephants regularly walking through camp during the day and the sounds of nearby hippos and lions at night. With its network of lakes and rivers this area is known for its water based activities.

The eight tent camp is simple and stylish with evening-breeze cooling systems above the beds making the hottest nights more comfortable. During the day you can cool off in the pool or spot wildlife making its way to the water from an armchair in lounge area. Out and about explore by vehicle, on foot, or in a boat with fishing excursions available.

LOCATION

Royo ya Selous is located in the Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania.  The nearest airstrip is Mbuyu which is 15 minutes from camp.

CAMP

Roho ya Selous’ eight tents are tucked away into the trees and set far apart and are stylish and spacious, measuring an impressive 60m² inside. Details include an evening breeze cooling system over the bed to allow you to sleep peacefully even during the hotter months and an en-suite bathroom complete with indoor and outdoor shower. Twin and triple configurations are also available on request.

The family tent is the same size as the double tents but is spacious enough to accommodate a family of five – the footprint of the tents is 60m² inside. The main bedroom is a more compact version of that of the double tents with an evening breeze cooling system over the bed, fan, reed walls, and slate floors. There is a main bathroom with a flush toilet and outdoor shower. The children’s room has a shower and basin and a bunk bed and single bed accommodating up to three children. Due to the layout, the beds in the children’s room do not have evening breeze cooling system.

Meals are all prepared in camp and served communally. Breakfast is a range of cereals, fruits and yoghurts or a full cooked option available after your morning game drive. For lunch it’s a light buffet with lots of salads and veggies. Enjoy an afternoon tea before your afternoon game drive and return to dinner – a relaxed three-course meal served under the stars. You can also opt for a private dinner next to the pool for extra peace and quiet.

The camp welcome families with children over 5 years and there is a family tent with an enclosed ensuite children’s room ideal for younger kids, and a range of activities to keep the whole family entertained. Please note that children must be 16 years old to join walking safaris but there is no age limit for game drives or boat safaris.

ACTIVIITIES AND WILDLIFE

In the heart of the Selous Game Reserve — the largest reserve in Africa — Roho ya Selous is well located for excellent game viewing close to a key waterway that links Lake Manze to Lake Nzerakera.  The Selous has a marshy landscape of palm trees, lakes and rivers and is home to elephants, buffalos, lions, hippos, leopards, giraffe, impala, fish eagles and one of the largest populations of wild dogs in Africa. There are more than 400 recorded bird species including a good number of Pel’s fishing owls in the region.

Game drives – the camp has seven-seater open-sided game vehicles for exploring further afield in the reserve and getting closer to large herbivores and predators. The vehicles have canvas roofs, power points and fridges.

Boating – one of the things that separates the Selous from other Tanzanian parks is its boating safaris which are great for watching wildlife drinking and birding.

Fishing – combine a boat safari with a spot of fishing – the rivers hold a good population of tiger fish and various types of catfish.

Photographic safaris – Roho ya Selous is home to one of Asilia’s specially modified photographic vehicles which is equipped with beanbags and camera rests and 360° swivel seats.

Walking safaris – head out on foot for an exploration of the Selous. Stop and examine the tiniest creatures such as ants and butterflies and learn about tracking animals using their prints and dung.

ROHO YA SELOUS IS CLOSED MID MARCH TO THE END OF MAY

THE CAMP WELCOMES CHILDREN 5 YEARS AND OLDER AND IS FAMILY FRIENLDY
