LAIKIPIA WILDERNESS CAMP – LAIKIPIA

Ol Doinyo Lemboro Ranch is located in Central Laikipia with the most spectacular variety in landscape. The low-lying land around the Ewaso Narok River is bordered by vibrant ridgelines dotted with ancient dryland forest remnants. In contrast, the plateaus of the western ridges which advertise the edge of the great Rift Valley, form flat grassy plains with brilliant escarpment views.

Within this 20,000-acre Landscape, Laikipia Expeditions has four camps; Laikipia Wilderness Main Camp, Palm Camp, Leopard Springs and River Camp. All Camps are designed to provide an adventurous safari experience while contributing to the local area economically and environmentally.

LOCATION

Laikipia Wilderness is located on the Ol Doinyo Lemboro Ranch within the Laikipia Plateau, approximately two hours’ drive north of Nanyuki and within easy reach of Nairobi by scheduled light aircraft followed by a scenic game drive to your chosen camp.

ACCOMMODATION

Nestling on a hillside above the Ewaso Narok River, Laikipia Wilderness Camp provides a unique, adventurous safari experience where people prefer to stay longer and enjoy this family-owned camp.

The rooms are carefully sited to invite both couples who seek a private, secluded stay and families of all ages. Ajoined tents with a shared bathroom and veranda enable families to keep an eye on little ones, yet soak up the wilderness experience.

Six tented rooms complement a central dining area with indoor and outdoor sitting areas giving snug warmth and views of the stunning Laikipia Landscape. Plentiful books and board games enable reference and relaxation. Traditional and beautifully rustic; each bedroom and ensuite bathroom is individually designed using local materials, sustainable soaps and products. Cool, private verandas invite peace and relaxation while you enjoy the vista and the wildlife.

On top of a rock above the main camp, a swinging bench offers a 360-degree view of the Laikipia landscape with the impressive skyline of Mount Kenya on clear days. Feel free to grab your book and enjoy the tranquillity of this unique viewpoint. The owner’s dogs do live in the main camp helping to make the atmosphere feel like home.

Food at Laikipia Wilderness reflects the relaxed atmosphere of the camp.  Meals are freshly prepared using local ingredients wherever possible and served either communally or privately depending on guest preferences. Breakfast may be enjoyed overlooking the river, lunches are often taken outdoors, while dinner is accompanied by lantern light and conversation around the fire.  The emphasis is on generous, home-cooked cuisine rather than elaborate fine dining, perfectly matching the adventurous spirit of the camp.

ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE

The camp overlooks the Ewaso Narok River, whose permanent water attracts wildlife throughout the year.  Laikipia has become one of Kenya’s most important wildlife regions. Covering vast private ranches and community conservancies, it supports healthy populations of elephants, endangered African wild dogs, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and numerous predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah, while maintaining relatively low visitor numbers compared with the Maasai Mara.  The region also forms an important wildlife corridor between Mount Kenya and northern Kenya’s more arid ecosystems, creating an impressive diversity of habitats and species.

Because much of the land is privately managed for conservation alongside sustainable livestock grazing, wildlife densities remain consistently high across large areas.

The area has also become well known for sightings of melanistic (black) leopards, although—as with all truly wild animals—sightings can never be guaranteed.

Birdwatchers are equally well rewarded, with several hundred recorded bird species ranging from colourful bee-eaters and kingfishers to raptors soaring above the escarpments.

One of Laikipia Wilderness’s greatest draws is the sheer variety of activities available. Guests are encouraged to tailor each day according to their interests rather than simply following a fixed safari schedule.

Walking Safaris

Walking is at the heart of the Laikipia experience.  Led by highly experienced professional guides, walks allow guests to appreciate the smaller details often missed from vehicles. Animal tracks, birdlife, insects, plants and geology all become part of the safari, while encounters with larger wildlife are managed carefully by guides with extensive local knowledge.

Day and Night Game Drives

Game drives explore a wide variety of habitats across the ranch.  Night drives are particularly rewarding, revealing many species rarely seen during daylight including aardwolf, genet, civet, porcupine and nocturnal predators beginning their evening hunts.

River Activities

Depending on river conditions, guests may enjoy gentle river tubing or fishing, adding another dimension to a stay that feels much more varied than a traditional safari itinerary.

Hiking and Rock Exploration

The landscape around camp features rocky escarpments, valleys and ridges that reward more energetic travellers with extensive views across the surrounding wilderness.

The dry seasons, typically from June to October and again from January to March, generally offer excellent wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around permanent water sources and vegetation becomes less dense.

The greener months following the rains bring dramatic scenery, newborn wildlife and excellent birdwatching, making the camp rewarding in every season.
