SOROI BLUE – DIANI BEACH

Soroi Blue sits directly on Diani Beach on Kenya’s south coast, with the Indian Ocean in front and tropical gardens surrounding the property. This is a small hotel rather than a large coastal resort, with just eleven individually styled rooms and suites. Some look directly across the beach and ocean, while others face into the gardens.

Diani’s long white-sand beach is an obvious part of the attraction, but there is plenty to draw you away from a sun lounger. A fringing coral reef runs along the coast, making snorkelling possible directly from the beach, while longer days can be spent travelling south by dhow towards Wasini Island and the reefs of Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park. Inland, Kaya Kinondo provides an opportunity to walk through one of the remaining sacred forests of the Mijikenda people.

That variety gives Soroi Blue plenty to work with during a longer stay. A morning could be spent snorkelling from the beach, another day exploring the marine park by boat, while Kaya Kinondo and the historic centre of Mombasa introduce quite different aspects of Kenya’s coast. There is also an 18-hole golf course approximately ten minutes from the hotel.

Back at Soroi Blue, the emphasis is straightforward: a small luxury boutique hotel, direct access to Diani Beach, a swimming pool and spa, with balconies overlooking the gardens and the sparkelling Indian Ocean.

LOCATION

Soroi Blue is situated at Diani Beach, south of Mombasa on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast. Ukunda Airstrip is approximately 5.5 kilometres away, with the road transfer taking around 20 minutes. Flights from Nairobi take approximately one hour and twenty minutes, making Diani straightforward to combine with a safari elsewhere in Kenya.

ACTIVITIES

The coral reef running parallel to Diani Beach creates sheltered areas close to shore and provides opportunities for swimming and snorkelling without travelling elsewhere first. Further south, Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park can be reached on a full-day excursion, with dhow trips travelling via the waters around Wasini Island and regular opportunities to encounter dolphins during the journey.

The location also provides access to a very different environment at Kaya Kinondo, a surviving area of indigenous coastal forest cared for by Mijikenda elders. Guided visits introduce both the plants and wildlife of the forest and its continuing cultural and spiritual importance to the local community.

Snorkelling and Diving – A fringing coral reef runs along the Diani coastline, allowing guests to snorkel directly from the beach when conditions are suitable. For those wanting to explore further, diving excursions visit reefs along Kenya’s south coast, where warm Indian Ocean waters support coral, reef fish, turtles and other marine life.

Wasini Island and Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park – Full-day dhow excursions travel south towards Wasini Island and Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park. The day combines time on the water with snorkelling in the marine park, and dolphins are frequently encountered during the journey. It is an opportunity to explore considerably further along the coast while still returning to Soroi Blue the same day.

Kaya Kinondo Sacred Forest – A short drive south of Diani, Kaya Kinondo protects an area of indigenous coastal forest that remains culturally and spiritually important to the Mijikenda people. Guided by local elders, walks through the forest introduce its plants, birds and smaller wildlife while explaining the traditions associated with the kaya.

Fort Jesus and Mombasa Old Town – A visit to Mombasa introduces another part of the history of Kenya’s coast. Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese in 1593 and overlooks the entrance to the Old Port. From here, guided walks continue into the narrow streets of the Old Town, with its carved doors, mosques, markets and buildings reflecting centuries of African, Arab, Asian and European influence.

Golf – The nearby 18-hole golf course is approximately ten minutes from Soroi Blue and can be played throughout the year. This makes it practical to include a round during a stay without having to devote an entire day to the excursion.

Beach Dining – Private dinners can be arranged directly on the sand, with a menu built around fresh lobster and the day’s catch. It is a simple way to make use of the beachfront location in the evening rather than moving the experience into a separate restaurant setting.
