LOCATION
Tawana is set amid the pristine landscapes of Botswana’s iconic Moremi Game Reserve. This new premier camp allows for unrivalled discovery of the Okavango Delta and the wider wilderness ecosystem of northern Botswana. It stands in harmony with the lush forests and grasslands that line the banks of the perennial Gomoti river. Blending the romance of a contemporary safari camp with unforgettable safari experiences. Entirely unfenced, wildlife is free to wander through camp.
In partnership with Chief Tawana Moremi, Tawana Camp is dedicated to preserving the eco-system and celebrating the cultural heritage of the region. A truly unique and unforgettable safari experience where fortunate guests can freely explore one of the last wild corners of Africa.
ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE
The south-eastern reaches of the Moremi Game Reserve is renowned for its high concentration of wildlife. Healthy populations of key predators – particularly lion, leopard and African wild dogs – are frequently sighted just metres from the camp.
Permanent Gomoti River waters ensure a wide variety of game is present in the area year-round. Look forward to sighting large herds of antelope, including the semi-aquatic red lechwe and shy sitatunga. Within the lagoons and pools of the Gomoti large pods of hippos make themselves at home. Enormous Nile crocodiles are often seen basking on the banks.
When first summer rains arrive in November, breeding herds of elephants move into the mopane forests. This ‘green season’ brings its own magic, transforming the Moremi into a lush green landscape. Summer is also the best time for birders, with the arrival of the summer migrants. More than 400 bird species have been recorded here. Throughout the year the waterways and grasslands ensure the Moremi is a twitcher’s delight.
GIVING BACK
When humans and elephants compete for space and resources, Human Elephant Conflict (HEC) is inevitable. Human-elephant conflict among subsistence farmers in northern Botswana creates a uniquely challenging environment for HEC mitigation. Crop raiding, loss of food security and income, destruction of infrastructure and even mortalities are very real threats. Finding a solution is critical to creating an environment of coexistence.
Natural Selection has recently funded the Botswana Predator Conservation (BPC) BioBoundary Project. They are investigating the efficacy of plant-based airborne elephant repellents to help protect crops and infrastructure. This follows the discovery that a readily available, safe and natural product is a powerful repellent to elephants.
Camera trap videos have shown how the scent of a commercial essential oil has stopped elephants from passing through a gap in a fence even though they were on an established elephant commuting path. Similar reactions have also been observed with predator repellents.
The hope is that BPC are able to develop an inexpensive low-tech means of dispensing repellents. Ultimately the goal is to foster an environment for better co-existence.
TAWANA IS AN ALL YEAR ROUND DESTINATION. THE WATER FILLED FLOODPLAINS ATTRACT THE BIG HERDS TO THE WIDER OKAVANGO DELTA BETWEEN JULY AND OCTOBER.
WHEN WATER LEVELS RECEDE IN THE FLOODPLAINS, GAME IS ATTRACTED TO THE GOMOTI RIVER. THE RIVER FLOWS PAST TAWANA, OFFERING FRONT ROW SEATS FROM THE CAMP.
