LOCATION
Monachira Camp is located within the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana.
CAMP
Monachira has 10 double and family designer tents featuring a stunning bedroom, ensuite bathroom with both an outdoor shower, patio deck and relaxation area, with lots of space to unwind in your own privacy. Shaded by the island forests, tents are ideally positioned overlooking the vast floodplains while offering views of the wildlife in the surrounding wetlands.
The oversized tented deck area forms the social hub of the camps – here you will find a lounge and bar area set on expansive wooden decking, and furnishings are colourful in yellows, blacks and rusts which complement the wooden decks and colours of the bush. Adjacent to the lounge is the dining area where meals are taken al fresco.
Monachira has a separate pool area with sundecks and lounge chairs – perfect for cooling off after your safari, and the camp offers spa services in the comfort of your own room.
Electricity is harvested via solar panels and the hot water supply is generated by a state of the art Thermodynamic Solar Energy system, which ensures that the camps have hot water, no matter the weather.
ACTIVITIES AND WILDLIFE
The camp is situated on the edge of the Monachira channel not far from the famous Gudigwa heronries, offering great viewing of this amazing nesting ground of thousands of herons, egrets and storks. A chance to see elephants, lions, leopard and a wide variety of Okavango species on the islands and floodplains along the permanent channels of the Monachira river. Also, a chance to see the elusive Pels Fishing Owl and rare sitatunga, a semi aquatic swamp antelope.
Game Drives
Game drives are led by experienced guides with an in-depth knowledge of the area and its wildlife. Travel in comfort in our robust, open-air vehicles, specially designed for exceptional game viewing. With a maximum of six guests per vehicle, every seat is a window seat, ensuring an immersive and unobstructed safari experience.
Mokoro
Inspired by native local people who used traditional wooden mokoros as a form of transport, a modern version of this dugout canoe is an exceptionally relaxing way to explore the reed-lined waterways and discover different creatures you wouldn’t typically see from a vehicle or on foot.
Boating Safaris
Cruise through the calm waterways of the Okavango Delta or the Chobe River system, exploring the most remote, untamed sections of their tributaries. While boating in the Okavango Delta is seasonal, and usually available between May and August when the water levels are higher, the Chobe River offers year-round boating safari opportunities. Observe the iconic behaviour of wildlife as they swim, drink, and bask along the banks of the tributaries, all from the safety of a boat.
GIVING BACK
At Machaba Safaris, we are deeply committed to conserving the natural beauty and rich wildlife of Botswana and Zimbabwe. Our dedication to conservation extends beyond the safari experience; it is woven into the very fabric of our operations. From minimising our environmental footprint to actively uplifting and empowering local communities, conservation is at the heart of everything we do.
We proudly partner with local conservation NGOs, anti-poaching teams and engage in wildlife research to protect endangered species and their habitats. Collaborating with local stakeholders and conservation organisations ensures our efforts are both impactful and collaborative.
Our commitment also reaches the communities surrounding our reserves, where we sponsor student training and internships nurture local talent. We invest in local development projects, education programmes, and youth development initiatives to build a shared responsibility for conservation. Through our immersive safari experiences, we hope to deepen all of our understanding and appreciation of these unique ecosystems. By blending conservation and community, we strive to create lasting, positive impacts.
