ASDUNAS LODGE – VILANCULOS COAST

Set amongst the coastal dunes north of Vilanculos, asDunas Lodge occupies a quiet stretch of shoreline overlooking the Bazaruto Archipelago. The lodge has been carefully integrated into the dune forest, with elevated walkways linking the suites to the main lodge and a private staircase leading down to almost ten kilometres of uninterrupted beach. Rather than creating a formal resort, the design makes full use of the natural landscape, allowing the dunes, ocean and indigenous vegetation to remain at the centre of the experience.

One of the first things guests notice at asDunas is the sense of space. With just eight suites spread across two hectares of coastal forest, there is little indication of other guests beyond the main lodge. From each suite, the views extend across the Indian Ocean towards the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, whilst the beach below is reached in only a few minutes on foot.

The coastline here lends itself to a varied stay. Boat trips explore the islands and coral reefs of the Bazaruto Archipelago, whilst the sheltered bay in front of the lodge provides good conditions for swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking. Back at the lodge, daily spa treatments are included for every guest, making wellbeing part of the stay rather than an optional extra.

AsDunas is a small, owner-managed property where much of the day revolves around the beach, the sea and good food. Fresh seafood arrives daily from local fishermen, many ingredients are grown in the lodge’s own gardens, and the menus reflect the Italian heritage of the owners as much as the flavours of coastal Mozambique. It’s a property where the emphasis is placed on spending time outdoors, whether enjoying breakfast overlooking the ocean, walking the beach or watching the sun set from the red dunes behind the lodge.

LOCATION

asDunas Lodge is located approximately twenty kilometres north of Vilanculos and around thirty minutes from Vilanculos International Airport. Overlooking the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine National Park, it provides easy access to the islands, coral reefs and sandbanks whilst enjoying a quieter stretch of mainland coastline away from the town itself.

The lodge works particularly well as the beach element of a southern African safari, combining easily with Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa. Boat excursions depart for the Bazaruto Archipelago, whilst the coastline immediately in front of the lodge offers opportunities for swimming, beach walks and a range of water-based activities.

LODGE

asDunas accommodates a maximum of sixteen guests in eight ocean-facing suites, comprising two Cottage Suites and six Safari Tented Suites. Each suite has a private plunge pool, a generous deck overlooking the sea and direct access to the beach via the lodge’s network of walkways. The layout gives every suite a high degree of privacy whilst maintaining easy access to the main guest areas.

The main lodge includes an open-plan restaurant, lounge, bar, infinity pool and elevated sun deck overlooking the Indian Ocean. A series of open-air wellness pavilions are set amongst the dunes and tropical gardens, providing space for massages, yoga and other wellness activities. Throughout the property, the buildings are positioned to follow the natural contours of the dunes rather than altering the landscape.

Meals are served overlooking the ocean and change daily according to seasonal ingredients and the local catch. Fresh fish is supplied by fishermen from the bay, whilst herbs, fruit and vegetables are grown in the lodge’s gardens. The result is a menu that reflects both the local produce available and the Italian influence of the owners, giving the dining experience a distinctive character without becoming overly formal.

ACTIVITIES

Bazaruto Archipelago Excursions – Boat trips explore the islands, coral reefs and sandbanks of the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine National Park. Depending on sea conditions and guest interests, excursions may include snorkelling, island picnics, beach walks and time exploring some of the quieter parts of the archipelago.

Snorkelling and Diving – The reefs surrounding the Bazaruto Archipelago support a rich variety of marine life, including turtles, rays and colourful reef fish. Guided snorkelling and diving excursions visit a number of different reef systems, with sites selected according to conditions and guest experience. Whale sharks and manta rays may also be encountered at certain times of year.

Fishing – The waters off Vilanculos have long been recognised as one of southern Africa’s leading sport fishing destinations. Guided trips are available for both deep-sea and fly fishing, with experienced skippers choosing locations according to the season, weather and tides.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding – The sheltered waters in front of the lodge provide good conditions for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. These activities offer a relaxed way to explore the coastline and enjoy views back towards the dunes and surrounding forest.

Beach Walks – A staircase from the lodge leads directly onto a long stretch of beach that extends for several kilometres in either direction. Early mornings and late afternoons are particularly rewarding for walking, when the tide exposes wide areas of firm sand and local fishing boats begin returning to shore.

Spa and Wellness – A massage is included each day of your stay, with treatments taking place in open-air wellness pavilions overlooking the dunes. Yoga sessions and other wellness activities can also be arranged, making relaxation part of the daily routine rather than an optional addition.

GIVING BACK

AsDunas Lodge works closely with the surrounding community through local employment, training and the purchase of produce, seafood and services from businesses in the Vilanculos area. Much of the fresh fish served in the restaurant is supplied by local fishermen, whilst fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown in the lodge’s own gardens.

The lodge also promotes responsible tourism within the Bazaruto Archipelago, encouraging guests to appreciate the importance of protecting the marine environment and supporting activities that minimise the impact on the surrounding coastline and reefs.
