BAZARUTO SANDS – BAZARUTO ISLAND

Bazaruto Island is the largest island in Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago, a protected marine national park known for its wide beaches, freshwater lakes, towering sand dunes and coral reefs. The island remains lightly developed, with long stretches of coastline where the only signs of life may be traditional fishing dhows or seabirds feeding along the shoreline. It is a destination that appeals as much to those who enjoy exploring as to those looking for time to relax beside the Indian Ocean.

Bazaruto Sands occupies a quiet stretch of the island’s eastern shoreline, where dune forest meets the beach. The lodge has been developed on a deliberately small scale, with just seven suites spread along the coast rather than gathered around a central hotel building. This creates a peaceful atmosphere where guests are never far from the beach, the dunes or the shallow reef that lies directly offshore.

The surrounding coastline encourages guests to spend time outdoors. The house reef can be reached directly from the beach at low tide, kayaks and paddleboards are available for exploring the sheltered waters, and guided walks introduce the dune forest and the communities that continue to live on the island. For those wishing to explore further afield, boat trips visit the reefs, sandbanks and neighbouring islands that make the archipelago such a rewarding destination.

Although Bazaruto Sands offers a high standard of comfort, the emphasis is very much on the setting. The days are shaped by the tides, the weather and the opportunities to explore the island, whether that means spending the morning on the water, walking through the dunes or simply watching the changing colours of the Indian Ocean from your veranda.

LOCATION

Bazaruto Sands is situated on Bazaruto Island within the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine National Park, approximately 30 kilometres from the mainland town of Vilanculos. Guests normally fly to Vilanculos before transferring by helicopter to the island. The short flight provides an excellent view of the sandbanks, reefs and turquoise channels that define the archipelago.

The lodge combines particularly well with safari itineraries in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa. For many guests it provides a complete contrast to the bush, replacing game drives with time on the water whilst still offering plenty of opportunities to remain active throughout their stay.

LODGE

Bazaruto Sands has seven beachfront suites, including accommodation suitable for couples and larger family suites. Each has direct access to the beach, generous indoor and outdoor living space, and a private deck overlooking the Indian Ocean. Large sliding doors and shaded verandas allow the sea breeze to flow through the rooms, creating comfortable living spaces throughout the day.

The main guest areas include a restaurant, bar, swimming pool and comfortable lounge, all within a short walk of the beach. Meals are centred around fresh local ingredients, with seafood featuring regularly on the menu. Guests can choose to dine together or enjoy more private dining experiences arranged by the lodge team.

One feature that distinguishes Bazaruto Sands is the house reef, which lies directly in front of the lodge. At suitable tides guests can snorkel straight from the beach without travelling by boat, making it easy to spend an hour in the water before breakfast or return again later in the day when conditions are right. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are also available directly from the beach, allowing guests to explore the sheltered shoreline at their own pace.

ACTIVITIES

Snorkelling – The house reef, located directly in front of the lodge, is one of Bazaruto Sands’ defining features. At suitable tides, guests can enter the water straight from the beach to explore coral formations and a variety of tropical fish without needing a boat transfer. Guided snorkelling excursions are also available to explore other reefs within the archipelago.

Diving – The Bazaruto Archipelago offers a number of well-known dive sites suitable for both experienced divers and those wishing to gain their first qualification. Reef sharks, turtles, rays and large schools of reef fish are regularly encountered, while whale sharks and manta rays may be seen at certain times of the year.

Ocean Safaris – Boat trips explore different parts of the archipelago, visiting remote beaches, sandbanks and neighbouring islands. Dolphins are frequently seen and, between July and September, humpback whales migrate through these waters on their annual journey along the East African coastline.

Fishing – The waters around Bazaruto Island have long been recognised as one of Africa’s leading sport fishing destinations. Guided trips are available for both deep-sea and fly fishing, with experienced skippers selecting locations according to the tides, weather and season.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding – Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available directly from the beach, allowing guests to explore the sheltered shoreline at their own pace. Calm morning conditions often provide the best opportunity to paddle along the coast and observe marine life in the clear, shallow water.

Island Walks – Guided walks introduce the island beyond its beaches, exploring sand dunes, freshwater lakes and areas of indigenous vegetation. Depending on the route, there may also be opportunities to visit local communities and learn more about everyday life on Bazaruto Island.
