NYATI BEACH LODGE – VILANCULOS COAST

The coastline south of Vilanculos offers a different perspective on Mozambique from the offshore islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Here, long sandy beaches face the Indian Ocean while the sheltered waters of the archipelago lie just offshore. Traditional fishing boats launch each morning from nearby villages, flamingos feed in the coastal wetlands and the changing tides continually reshape the sandbanks that stretch towards the islands. It is an area that combines easy access with some of the country’s best marine environments.

Nyati Beach Lodge is set on a narrow strip of land between the Indian Ocean and the protected waters of the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary. Rather than being located on one of the offshore islands, the lodge provides direct access to both the mainland coastline and the Bazaruto Archipelago, making it a practical base for exploring the region by boat while returning each evening to the mainland.

The lodge appeals to guests who enjoy spending time on the water. Diving, snorkelling, fishing and sailing are all easily arranged, while boat excursions visit the islands, coral reefs and sandbanks that have made the Bazaruto Archipelago one of southern Africa’s best-known marine destinations. Between excursions, the beach provides plenty of space for walking or simply enjoying the uninterrupted views across the Indian Ocean.

For many visitors, one of the advantages of staying at Nyati Beach Lodge is its location. Guests have easy access to Vilanculos, the archipelago and the surrounding coastal sanctuary without relying entirely on helicopter transfers or island logistics. It works particularly well for those wishing to combine time on the beach with a range of marine activities.

LOCATION

Nyati Beach Lodge is situated approximately 25 kilometres south of Vilanculos on the mainland coast of Mozambique, within the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary. The lodge overlooks the Indian Ocean, with the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago visible offshore. Guests normally arrive via Vilanculos Airport before transferring by road to the lodge.

Its mainland location makes Nyati an excellent partner to safari itineraries in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia. Boat excursions provide access to the marine national park, while the surrounding coastal sanctuary protects beaches, wetlands and dune systems that support a wide variety of birdlife and marine species.

LODGE

Nyati Beach Lodge has twenty suites, including family accommodation and honeymoon suites, all within easy walking distance of the beach. Each suite has a private veranda overlooking either the ocean or the surrounding gardens, providing a comfortable place to relax after a day on the water.

The central guest area includes a restaurant, bar, swimming pool and lounge overlooking the beach. Meals feature locally caught seafood alongside international dishes, while outdoor dining makes the most of the coastal setting. The atmosphere is informal, with much of the day centred around the beach, the pool and the daily programme of excursions.

One of the lodge’s strengths is the variety of activities that can be reached within a short distance. Boats depart for the reefs and islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, while diving, fishing, sailing and whale watching are all readily accessible from the lodge. Guests looking for a quieter day can simply walk the beach, watch traditional fishing boats returning with their catch or enjoy the views across to the islands from the lodge.

ACTIVITIES

Bazaruto Archipelago Excursions – Scheduled boat trips explore the islands, sandbanks and coral reefs of the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine National Park. Excursions may include time on uninhabited beaches, snorkelling over coral reefs and picnics on remote sandbanks that appear and disappear with the changing tides.

Snorkelling and Diving – The reefs surrounding the archipelago support a wide variety of marine life, including turtles, rays, reef fish and seasonal visitors such as whale sharks and manta rays. Guided snorkelling and diving excursions are available for both experienced divers and those new to the sport.

Fishing – The waters off Vilanculos are well known for both offshore game fishing and inshore fly fishing. Depending on the season, anglers may target species including marlin, sailfish, giant trevally, kingfish and barracuda, with experienced local skippers selecting the most suitable fishing grounds each day.

Sailing and Water Sports – Hobie Cats, kayaks, paddleboards and other non-motorised water sports provide an opportunity to explore the sheltered waters surrounding the lodge. Sunset cruises and traditional dhow excursions can also be arranged, offering a different perspective of the coastline and archipelago.

Beach and Coastal Walks – Around ten kilometres of beach extend from the lodge, providing plenty of space for walking, beachcombing or simply enjoying the changing views across the Indian Ocean. Early mornings often bring traditional fishing boats returning to shore, while the tidal lagoons attract a variety of coastal birdlife.

Village and Cultural Visits – Excursions to nearby fishing communities and into Vilanculos provide an opportunity to see another side of coastal Mozambique. These visits offer an insight into local fishing traditions and everyday life beyond the beaches and resorts.

GIVING BACK

Nyati Beach Lodge is located within the Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary, an area established to protect both the terrestrial and marine environments surrounding the Bazaruto Archipelago. The sanctuary brings together conservation, tourism and local communities, helping to safeguard beaches, wetlands, coral reefs and the wildlife that depends upon them.

The lodge also supports the local community through employment, responsible tourism and excursions that introduce guests to nearby villages. Its approach encourages visitors to experience both the natural environment and the people who have lived along this coastline for generations.
