Southern Mozambique has a very different character from the island destinations further north. Instead of travelling by boat or helicopter to reach the coast, White Pearl Resorts sits on the mainland, overlooking a long stretch of beach where coastal forest, sand dunes and the Indian Ocean meet. The surrounding coastline remains lightly developed, giving guests plenty of space to enjoy the beach, explore the ocean or simply appreciate the changing colours of the sea throughout the day.

Located at Ponta Mamoli, around 25 kilometres north of the South African border, White Pearl combines straightforward access with a setting that feels distinctly remote. The resort lies between the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve and the Maputo Special Reserve, placing guests within easy reach of both outstanding marine life and one of southern Mozambique’s most important conservation areas.

The Indian Ocean shapes much of the experience here. Some guests spend their days diving or snorkelling on nearby reefs, others head out in search of dolphins or seasonal whales, whilst many are content to enjoy the beach directly in front of the lodge. With more than two kilometres of coastline and no neighbouring developments, it is easy to walk for long stretches without meeting anyone else.

White Pearl is equally suited to a stay in its own right or as a beach extension following a safari in South Africa, Eswatini or Botswana. Its location means guests can move from the bush to the coast in a single day, exchanging game drives for time on the beach whilst still having plenty of opportunities to remain active.

LOCATION

White Pearl Resorts is situated at Ponta Mamoli on Mozambique’s Lagoon Coast, approximately 80 kilometres south of Maputo and 25 kilometres north of the Kosi Bay border with South Africa. Guests may arrive by road from South Africa or Maputo, or by air into Maputo before completing the final section of the journey by road. This accessibility makes White Pearl one of Mozambique’s easiest high-quality beach lodges to combine with a southern African safari.

The resort overlooks the Indian Ocean and borders the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve, whilst the Maputo Special Reserve lies immediately inland. Together these protected areas support coral reefs, coastal forests, freshwater lakes, wetlands and an increasing population of elephant, antelope and birdlife.

LODGE

White Pearl Resorts has twenty-two ocean-facing suites built on timber stilts amongst the coastal dunes. Six Beach Pool Suites have direct access to the beach, whilst the remaining Pool Suites enjoy elevated views across the Indian Ocean. Every suite includes a private plunge pool, outdoor shower, spacious deck and large sliding doors that open towards the sea.

The central guest areas include a restaurant, beach bar, swimming pool, spa and dive centre, all connected by raised timber walkways through the dunes. The layout allows easy access between the suites and the beach whilst protecting the fragile vegetation beneath them.

Meals make good use of fresh seafood and local produce, with guests able to dine in the restaurant, on the deck overlooking the ocean or in more private locations by arrangement. Between activities, many guests divide their time between the beach, the pool and the shaded decks overlooking the sea.

One feature that distinguishes White Pearl is its location between two very different protected environments. Guests can spend the morning diving or snorkelling in the marine reserve before joining an afternoon excursion into the Maputo Special Reserve to look for elephant, giraffe, hippo and the rich birdlife of the coastal lakes and wetlands. That combination of ocean and wildlife experiences is unusual and gives the lodge an appeal that extends beyond a traditional beach holiday.

ACTIVITIES

Diving and Snorkelling – The reefs of the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve are easily reached by boat from the resort and support a rich variety of marine life. Guided dives and snorkelling excursions visit a number of reef systems where turtles, rays, reef fish and seasonal whale sharks may be encountered. The area is also recognised as one of southern Africa’s best locations for shark diving, with experienced dive guides selecting sites according to conditions and guest experience.

Ocean Safaris – Boat trips explore the coastline in search of dolphins, turtles and, between June and November, migrating humpback whales. Bottlenose dolphins are regularly seen throughout the year and dolphin encounters have become one of the area’s best-known wildlife experiences.

Swimming with Dolphins – White Pearl is one of the few locations in Mozambique where guided dolphin encounters take place on a regular basis. Working within established conservation guidelines, experienced guides accompany guests into the water when conditions are suitable, providing an opportunity to observe wild bottlenose dolphins in their natural environment.

Maputo Special Reserve – Guided excursions into the neighbouring Maputo Special Reserve introduce a very different side of southern Mozambique. The reserve protects coastal forest, wetlands and freshwater lakes, supporting elephant, giraffe, hippo, antelope and a wide variety of birdlife. It provides an interesting contrast to the marine activities available from the lodge.

Horse Riding – Guided rides follow the beach and surrounding coastal landscape, with opportunities for both experienced riders and beginners. Morning and late afternoon rides are particularly popular, when temperatures are cooler and the light across the coastline is at its best.

Beach Walks – More than two kilometres of undeveloped beach extend from the lodge, providing plenty of space for walking at any time of day. The changing tides continually reshape the shoreline, whilst traditional fishing boats can often be seen working just offshore.

Spa and Wellness – The spa offers a range of treatments together with yoga and wellness experiences, providing a quieter alternative between excursions or after a day spent on the water.
